WCLB does not describe how much personal assistance the passenger needs in the airport. It describes the battery-powered mobility aid being transported.

What Type of Battery Does WCLB Cover?

WCLB is used for a wheelchair or mobility aid with a lithium battery installed in the device.

Lithium batteries are common in powered wheelchairs, folding powerchairs, mobility scooters and power-assist devices because they can provide substantial energy without the weight of some older battery technologies.

Do not assume a powered wheelchair uses lithium simply because it is rechargeable. Check the battery label, user manual or manufacturer documentation.

WCLB vs WCLX

WCLB and WCLX both relate to lithium-powered mobility aids, but they describe different transport arrangements.

WCLX stands for wheelchair with a removed lithium battery. The WCLX code is used when the lithium battery has been removed from the mobility aid for transportation.

    WCBD means the wheelchair has a dry, non-spillable or other specific battery. The WCBD code is used for a wheelchair or mobility aid powered by a non-spillable battery, nickel-metal hydride battery or dry battery.

    WCLB means the wheelchair has a lithium battery. The WCLB airline code is specifically for an installed lithium battery. The correct code matters because the preparation and battery-safety rules are not identical.

    WCLB vs WCBW

    WCBW stands for a wheelchair with a spillable or wet battery. The WCBW code identifies a wheelchair or mobility aid powered by a wet-cell, spillable battery. A wheelchair that uses wet-cell batteries can leak corrosive electrolyte if they are not kept upright.

    WCLB identifies a lithium-powered mobility aid. The WCLB airline code means the lithium batteries aren’t spillable like WCBW batteries but have different safety concerns and transport requirements.

    WCLB vs WCMP

    WCMP means that the wheelchair is manually powered. The WCMP code is used for a manually powered wheelchair or mobility aid.

It can be helpful to prepare a factsheet with information about your wheelchair if you intend to travel so you have a quick reference guide for any questions which may come up. I recommend storing these in a Google drive so you have access to them wherever you are.

    Contact the airline as early as possible rather than waiting until check-in. This gives its dangerous-goods or special assistance teams time to review the mobility aid and confirm what is required.

    What Information Will the Airline Need?

    Airlines commonly ask for information that allows staff to identify and safely handle the wheelchair and battery.

    • The wheelchair or mobility aid make and model.
    • Length, width and height.
    • Total weight.
    • Battery type.
    • Battery voltage and capacity.
    • The watt-hour rating where relevant.
    • Whether the battery is removable.
    • How the electrical circuits are isolated.
    • How the wheelchair is placed into safe or freewheel mode.
    • Where safe lifting and tie-down points are located.

    Providing the manufacturer’s manual or an air-travel information sheet can make this process easier.

    What Is a Wheelchair Air Travel Information Card?

    An air travel information card or factsheet gives baggage and loading staff practical information about your mobility aid. It can include the wheelchair’s dimensions, weight, battery details, isolation method and instructions for moving or lifting it.

    IATA encourages clear information-sharing because powered mobility aids vary significantly. Staff cannot safely assume that two electric wheelchairs operate in the same way.

    Keep a copy with the mobility aid and another copy with your travel documents where possible.

    Does the Lithium Battery Stay in the Wheelchair?

    It can, provided the mobility aid and battery meet the conditions for safe transport with the battery installed.

    IATA’s 2026 guidance states that battery-powered mobility aids must be prepared to prevent unintentional activation and the battery terminals must be protected from short circuit.

    The battery can remain securely attached when the electrical circuits can be isolated according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the battery is adequately protected against damage. If the design does not provide adequate battery protection, the battery may need to be removed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    What Happens if the Battery Must Be Removed?

    If a lithium battery must be removed from the mobility aid for transportation, the handling arrangements change. This is where the WCLX code may be more relevant than the WCLB airline code.

    Removed lithium batteries are subject to specific packing, terminal-protection and cabin-transport requirements. Do not remove a battery at the airport unless you understand the manufacturer’s instructions and the airline has confirmed what it expects.

    What Is the Watt-Hour Rating?

    Airlines may ask for the battery’s watt-hour rating, usually written as Wh. This is a measure of the battery’s energy capacity and is important in lithium-battery transport rules. The watt-hour rating may be printed directly on the battery label. If it is not obvious, check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than guessing.

    Can You Bring Spare Lithium Wheelchair Batteries?
