Travelling through Tunisia with reduced mobility, hidden disabilities, autism, sensory needs or medical equipment can be much easier when you know where to find airport support in advance.
Most major Tunisian airports offer special assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), wheelchair users, elderly travellers, passengers with hidden disabilities, and families needing extra support. In many cases, assistance should be requested at least 48 hours before travel through your airline.
This guide lists the main airports in Tunisia and where to find their special assistance, disability services or mobility support information. If you are planning to travel in Tunisia, my guide to visiting with autistic children is a good place to begin.
Quick Wins for Using Special Assistance in Tunisia
• Request airport special assistance at least 48 hours before departure
• Add your needs directly through your airline booking where possible
• If flying with Tunisair, special assistance can also be arranged directly through their assistance service
• Keep mobility aids, medication and medical letters in your hand luggage
• Arrive earlier than usual if you need wheelchair support or additional screening time

Tunisair advises passengers to notify them during booking or contact their call centre for wheelchair support, companions, service animals and other special needs.

Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport: Special Assistance Services
Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE)
The main airport for Djerba Island and southern Tunisia holiday resorts.
Passengers needing wheelchair services, boarding support or disability assistance should usually request help via their airline in advance.
Djerba-Zarzis International Airport: Special Assistance Information | There is no specific special assistance page availble but there is airport information, maps and passenger service information on the main website.
Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA)
Serving Sfax and central Tunisia.
Most PRM and disability support is arranged through your airline before travel.
Sfax-Thyna International Airport: Secial Assistance Services | Again, no direct special assistance page so I have left the link for the airport website.
Tozeur-Nefta International Airport (TOE)
Useful for desert tourism and southern Tunisia travel.
Airport assistance is normally coordinated through your airline and airport ground services.
Tozeur-Nefta International Airport: Special Assistance Team | There is no special assistance page, I could not even find an official website for the airport so I have left a link to the page I did find with the best set of information on it.
Tabarka-Aïn Draham International Airport (TBJ)
Serving north-west Tunisia and coastal holiday areas.
Passengers requiring support should request PRM services through their airline before travel.
Tabarka-Aïn Draham International Airport: Special Assistance Info | Again, no direct link to a special assistance page and no official website linked on Google so I have left a link to a page with decent airport information.
Gafsa-Ksar International Airport (GAF)
A smaller regional airport with limited services, so advance notice is especially important.
I could not find any websites with decent information about this airport to leave a link to.
Gabès-Matmata International Airport (GAE)
Regional airport serving southern Tunisia.
Support for reduced mobility passengers should be pre-booked through the airline.
Gabès-Matmata International Airport: Special Assistance Services | There was no airport website or special assistance page I could find online for this airport but I did find a good webpage which includes contact information for the airport.
Skanes-Monastir Charter and Regional Flights
Most package holiday flights use assistance support that is arranged through the airline rather than a dedicated airport disability page.
For charter travellers with operators like TUI or Nouvelair, it is important to request assistance when booking.
TUI Assisted Travel: Assisted Travel with TUI
Nouvelair Airport Information: At the Airport – Special Assistance Information
If you are new to assisted travel, my guide to getting help at the airport explains what it is, who can use it and how to book it. It is worth learning about airline disability codes so you can make sure the correct one is applied to your passenger booking – and if you are travelling with someone who has autism then you need to know what the DPNA code is. Before you travel, learn about the Sunflower Lanyard and how it can help you if you travel with a hidden disability.
Tunisair Express Special Assistance
If your domestic or regional Tunisian flight is operated by Tunisair Express, they also provide dedicated support.
Tunisair Express Assistance: Specific Special Assistance
They confirm that airport staff will receive your assistance request in advance when your needs are communicated before travel. Personal mobility equipment such as wheelchairs also receives priority unloading.
If you find that you are struggling to locate any special assistance information for the airport, you can always use the PRM Assist App to book.
How to Request Special Assistance in Tunisia
Most Tunisian airports follow the same process:
Step 1: Contact your airline
This is the most important step. Airports usually do not accept direct PRM bookings from passengers.
Step 2: Give at least 48 hours’ notice
This allows airport teams to prepare wheelchair services, escort support or boarding help.
Step 3: Explain exactly what you need
For example:
• wheelchair to gate
• assistance through security
• support for hidden disability or autism
• help boarding stairs
• support with medical equipment
• travelling with a service animal
Step 4: Arrive early
Special assistance can take longer at check-in and security.
Is Tunisia Good for Accessible Travel?
It depends heavily on the airport and resort area.
Large tourist airports like Enfidha, Monastir, Tunis and Djerba are generally much easier for wheelchair users and families needing assistance than smaller regional airports. Hotel accessibility can vary significantly, so checking transfers and resort access in advance is important.
For autistic travellers, quieter airports like Enfidha can sometimes feel less overwhelming than larger hubs.
Flying to Tunisia with a disability, hidden disability or mobility needs is much easier when support is arranged before you travel.
The biggest mistake families make is assuming the airport will organise everything automatically. In reality, most support starts with your airline booking.
Plan early, request clearly, and use the assistance available – because airports are far less stressful when you do not try to manage them alone.
