Planning an accessible cruise often starts long before embarkation day. Knowing how to contact the right disability or accessibility team can make a huge difference when arranging wheelchair access, accessible cabins, autism support, dietary needs, medical equipment, hearing or visual assistance, or help for hidden disabilities.
Most major cruise lines have dedicated accessibility teams or special needs departments that handle these requests separately from normal customer service.
This guide brings together the major cruise lines and where to find their accessibility support, so you can save time and book with confidence.
Why Contacting the Accessibility Team Matters
General customer service teams often cannot answer detailed questions about:
- Accessible cabin layouts
- Shower access and transfer space
- Hoists or tender limitations
- Mobility scooter policies
- Oxygen concentrators and CPAP machines
- Autism and sensory accommodations
- Food allergies and medical diets
- Hearing assistance
- Service animals
- Priority boarding or embarkation support
Speaking directly with the accessibility or special needs team helps avoid surprises later.

Tips Before Contacting a Cruise Line
Before you contact accessibility support, prepare:
- Booking reference (if already booked)
- Exact cabin questions
- Measurements needed for mobility devices
- Medical forms if required
- Details of food allergies
- Airport transfer concerns
- Tender port concerns
- Special boarding requests
Be specific. “Is this cabin wheelchair accessible?” is less useful than “Can a powered wheelchair turn fully inside the bathroom?”

My Advice for Accessible Cabin Bookings
Never rely only on deck plans.
Cruise deck plans can be misleading, and accessible cabins vary hugely even within the same ship class. Always ask for:
- Bathroom photos
- Door width confirmation
- Bed clearance measurements
- Shower threshold details
- Muster station location
- Distance to lifts
- Nearby companion cabins if needed
This is especially important because accessible cabins are limited and often sell out first.
Cruising can be one of the easiest ways for disabled travellers and families with autistic children to travel – but only when the right support is arranged properly.
The earlier you contact the cruise line’s accessibility team, the better your options usually are.
Never be afraid to ask detailed questions. It is far better to be the “difficult guest” before booking than to discover problems once you are onboard.
A good accessibility team can completely change your cruise experience.
