Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), also known as Son Sant Joan Airport, is one of Spain’s busiest airports and a major gateway to Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. If you are travelling with autism, reduced mobility, a hidden disability, medical needs or any condition that makes navigating an airport more difficult, special assistance at Palma Airport can make your journey much easier.

The airport provides free assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) and other eligible disabled passengers. Depending on your needs, assistance can include help navigating the terminal, getting through airport processes and boarding or leaving the aircraft.

If you are planning a wider trip to Spain or Mallorca I have some guides which will help you with planning your trip: Spain with autistic children and Mallorca with autistic children.

Quick Wins For Special Assistance at Palma Airport

Also known as ‘Sin Barreras’ in Spanish which means ‘Without Barriers’

Book special assistance at least 48 hours before your flight through your airline, travel agent or tour operator.

Tell your airline exactly what assistance you need rather than simply providing the name of a condition or disability.

Arrive at the airport with plenty of time, particularly during Mallorca’s busy summer season.

Look for the designated PRM meeting points if you need to call for assistance when you arrive at the airport.

If you are travelling with a wheelchair or powered mobility aid, provide your airline with details in advance.

Consider requesting the DPNA SSR code if you are autistic or have an intellectual or developmental disability and require assistance.

Who Can Use Special Assistance at Palma Airport?

Special assistance is not only for wheelchair users. Passengers may require assistance for many different reasons.

You may need assistance if you or someone you are travelling with has:

Autism

An intellectual or developmental disability

A hidden disability

Mobility difficulties

Chronic pain or fatigue

A visual impairment

A hearing impairment

A temporary injury

A condition that makes walking long distances difficult

The type of assistance you receive should be based on your individual needs. I have guides that cover travelling with a number of these disabilities or differences: travelling with ADHD, travelling with allergies, travelling with reduced mobility, travelling with autism and travelling with fibromyalgia.

How to Book Special Assistance at Palma Airport

Special assistance should normally be requested through your airline, travel agent or tour operator. It is recommended that you request assistance at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. Booking in advance allows your airline and the airport assistance provider to prepare for your arrival.

When requesting assistance, explain exactly what you need help with. This might include:

Travelling long distances through the terminal

Using a wheelchair

Navigating the airport

Reaching your departure gate

Boarding the aircraft

Leaving the aircraft after landing

Travelling with your own wheelchair or mobility equipment

Providing specific information can help ensure that the special assistance at Palma Airport arranged is suitable for you. To learn more about the types of help you can get at the airport, head to my guide about airport special assistance so you can get an idea of what you can ask for.

Airline SSR Codes

Your airline may add a Special Service Request (SSR) code to your booking to indicate the type of assistance you require.

Common wheelchair assistance codes include WCHR, WCHS and WCHC, while DPNA may be used for a passenger with an intellectual or developmental disability who requires assistance. If you’d like to learn more about the DPNA code and who can use it my guide explains all of that.

If you are unsure which SSR code applies to you, explain your needs to your airline rather than requesting a particular code based solely on its description. I have a guide which lists out all of the airline disability SSR codes so you can browse it and figure out which one suits your situation best.

Arriving at Palma Airport For Your Flight

If you have booked special assistance at Palma Airport, follow the instructions provided by your airline and allow plenty of time before departure. Palma Airport has designated meeting points for passengers requiring assistance. The meeting points can be identified by the sign above them with a blue ‘i’ alongside a yellow wheelchair symbol. These allow you to notify the assistance service that you have arrived and are ready to receive support. Depending on your needs, assistance can then be provided as you make your way through the airport.

During the busy summer months, Palma Airport can be particularly crowded. Arriving with additional time can reduce some of the stress associated with queues and busy terminal areas.

Special Assistance Meeting Points at Palma Airport

Passengers requiring PRM assistance can use designated meeting points at the airport. When you arrive at one of these points, you can notify the assistance service that you are there.

If you are being dropped off at the airport, it can be useful to check the location of the nearest assistance meeting point before travelling. This can reduce the amount of walking required before assistance begins.

Where to Find the Special Assistance Meeting Points at Palma Airport

There are several designated special assistance meeting points located around Palma Airport. You can find them in the following locations:

Outside the main terminal building on the forecourt at Floor 2, Departures (Check-in).

Inside the main terminal building in the Floor 2 Departures (Check-in) hall.

On the far side of the Floor 2 Departures (Check-in) hall inside the main terminal.

Outside the main terminal building on the forecourt at Ground Floor Arrivals.

On Floor 4 of the parking building, close to the connecting walkway leading to the terminal’s Departures area.

Outside the ground floor of the parking building, near the bus stop and underneath the connecting walkway.

Hidden Disabilities And Autism at Palma Airport

Not every passenger who requires assistance has a visible disability. Autistic passengers and people with intellectual, developmental or other hidden disabilities may find certain parts of the airport experience particularly challenging.

Difficulties may include:

Crowds

Noise

Long queues

Unexpected changes

Communication difficulties

Sensory overload

Unfamiliar procedures

Waiting for long periods

If you or your child requires support because of a hidden disability, explain your individual needs when arranging Palma Airport disability assistance.

DPNA Assistance at Palma Airport

DPNA is an airline SSR code generally used for a passenger with an intellectual or developmental disability who requires assistance. This can be relevant to some autistic passengers who need help navigating the airport but do not require physical mobility assistance.

The support required will vary considerably between passengers. When contacting your airline, explain what aspects of the airport journey are likely to be difficult and what assistance would help.

To learn more about how Palma Airport supports those with hidden disabilities you can read more on the AENA website page for hidden disabilities at Mallorca Airport.

The Aena Badge For People With Invisible Disabilities

Palma de Mallorca Airport is part of the Aena airport network, which offers a special badge for passengers with invisible disabilities. The badge is designed to discreetly indicate to airport staff that the person wearing it may need additional understanding, patience or support while travelling through the airport.

The Aena badge may be useful for autistic passengers and people with other non-visible disabilities who can find busy airport environments, queues, communication or unexpected changes difficult. Wearing the badge can help make staff aware of an invisible disability without the passenger or their family having to repeatedly explain their needs.

It is important to remember that the Aena invisible disabilities badge is not the same as booking special assistance. If you require specific help navigating Palma Airport or assistance getting to or from the aircraft, you should still arrange the appropriate assistance through your airline in advance.

The badge also does not automatically guarantee priority access to every airport process. Any adjustments or support available may depend on the passenger’s individual circumstances and the procedures in place at Palma Airport.

Passengers who would benefit from the scheme can request the badge through Aena before travelling. It is worth applying in advance and checking the latest information for Palma de Mallorca Airport before your journey. I have a guide dedicated to the AENA hidden disability badge and how to apply for it so you can get yours without any headaches. The AENA badge is the only Palma Airport disability badge that is recognised in Palma Airport.

Security Screening With Special Assistance at Palma Airport

Security screening can be one of the more challenging parts of travelling through an airport, particularly for passengers with sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties or medical needs. If you are using special assistance, staff can help guide you through the airport process. If you or your child has difficulty understanding instructions, being touched or separating from essential items, it can be helpful to explain this before screening begins.

Passengers travelling with medication, liquid medication or medical equipment should also check the relevant security requirements before travelling. To make travelling with medication easier, I have written a guide about what to include on your doctors letter for travelling with medication so you can get it right the first time.

Boarding Your Flight at Palma Airport

Depending on your individual assistance requirements and airline procedures, support may be available when travelling from the departure gate to the aircraft.

Passengers with significant mobility needs may require specialised equipment to board the aircraft if boarding is not via an airbridge.

If you would benefit from boarding at a particular time because of autism, sensory needs or another disability, discuss this with your airline and the assistance team.

Some autistic passengers prefer to board early so they can settle into their seat before the aircraft becomes busy. Others may prefer to board later to minimise the amount of time spent sitting on the aircraft. The best option depends on the individual passenger.

Arriving at Palma Airport With Special Assistance

If Palma de Mallorca Airport is your destination, assistance can also be arranged for your arrival.

Depending on your needs, this may include assistance with:

Leaving the aircraft

Travelling through the terminal

Passport control where applicable

Reaching baggage reclaim

Collecting mobility equipment

Reaching an agreed point within the airport

If you are travelling with your own wheelchair or mobility aid, confirm with your airline where it will be returned to you after landing.

To learn more about barrier free travel at Mallorca Palma Airport you can read more on the airport website page for persons with reduced mobility.

Travelling With a Wheelchair or Mobility Equipment

If you are travelling with your own wheelchair, powered wheelchair, mobility scooter or other mobility equipment, inform your airline before travelling.

Your airline may need information about:

The dimensions of the mobility aid

Its weight

Whether it can be folded

The type of battery it uses

How the battery can be disconnected or isolated

Battery-powered mobility equipment may be subject to specific aviation safety requirements, so it is important to provide accurate information in advance. Where possible, consider taking photographs of your mobility equipment before handing it over for transport. You may also want to attach clear instructions explaining how it should be handled.

Travelling Through Palma Airport With an Autistic Child

Airports can be particularly challenging for autistic children because they involve multiple transitions, unfamiliar environments, crowds and unpredictable waiting times.

Preparing in advance can help.

You may want to bring:

Noise-cancelling headphones or ear defenders

Familiar snacks

Comfort items

Fidget or sensory toys

A tablet or phone with downloaded entertainment

A visual schedule

Photos showing different stages of the airport journey

Explaining the journey as a series of smaller steps can also make the experience more predictable.

For example:

Arrive at the airport → check in → go through security → find the gate → wait → board the plane.

If your child needs assistance navigating these stages, request support through your airline before travelling.

How Much Does Special Assistance at Palma Airport Cost?

Special assistance at Palma Airport for eligible disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility is provided free of charge. You should not be charged for requesting standard airport PRM assistance. Ready to learn more about PRM? I have a guide that explains what PRM means and what it covers.

How Early Should I Book Palma Airport Special Assistance?

You should aim to request special assistance at Palma Airport least 48 hours before your flight. You can still ask for assistance if you have not booked in advance, but the airport may not be able to provide the same level of service immediately.

Booking ahead gives the assistance team time to prepare for your needs. You can also make a booking, or a backup booking, via the PRM Assist app.

Tips For Using Special Assistance at Palma Airport

Book your assistance as early as possible and keep a record of your request.

Check your booking before travelling to make sure your assistance request has been added correctly.

When you arrive at Palma Airport, make yourself known at the appropriate assistance meeting point or follow the instructions provided by your airline.

If your needs change, tell the assistance team. The support you require when you arrive at the airport may be different from what you expected when you originally booked your flight.

Most importantly, be specific about what you need. Saying “I need special assistance” provides less useful information than explaining that you cannot walk long distances, need help navigating unfamiliar environments or require additional support because of an intellectual or developmental disability.

Contact The Mallorca Airport Special Assistance Team

If you still have unanswered questions about the Palma Airport disability assistance you can contact the airport directly using the following information:

Telephone: (+34) 91 321 10 00 | Open from 7:00 to 00:00.

Email: sinbarreras@aena.es

Palma Airport can become extremely busy, particularly during the peak summer holiday season, and the size of the terminal can make travelling difficult for passengers with mobility needs and other disabilities. The waits at Palma Airport are much worse than usual due to the EES registration taking place throughout 2026. If you are unsure how you will handle registering for the EES system with a disability – not to worry, my guide explains all of that too.

Booking special assistance at Palma Airport in advance can provide valuable support throughout your journey.

Whether you need wheelchair assistance, help navigating the terminal or support because of a hidden disability, arranging assistance before you travel can make your experience at Palma de Mallorca Airport more manageable.

The most important step is to contact your airline at least 48 hours before travelling and explain your individual requirements as clearly as possible. This gives both your airline and the airport assistance service the best opportunity to provide the support you need.

Spain has one of the best airport accessibility systems in Europe thanks to Aena, which manages the majority of the country’s commercial airports, including mainland Spain, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands.

Most Spanish airports use Aena’s free “Barrier Free” (Sin Barreras) assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility, hidden disabilities, autism, sensory needs, and other accessibility requirements. Assistance should usually be requested at least 48 hours before your flight, either through your airline or directly via Aena.

You can also request the Aena Hidden Disabilities Badge, which can help staff identify that you or your child may need extra time, understanding, or support without needing to explain everything repeatedly.

Quick Wins for Special Assistance at Spanish Airports

It is important to know that most airports in Spain use Aena’s free “Barrier Free” special assistance service for disabled passengers, hidden disabilities and reduced mobility support and no longer support the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyard scheme. The same Aena system covers most mainland Spain airports, the Canary Islands and the Balearics, making travel more predictable.

Ask for the DPNA code to be added if travelling with an autistic child or someone with a developmental disability

Apply for the Aena Hidden Disabilities Badge to help staff recognise invisible disabilities without repeated explanations

Arrive at least 2.5 hours before departure if using special assistance services

Look for designated PRM meeting points throughout the airport for easier check-in and support

Quick Tips for Booking Disability Assistance in Spain

Book at Least 48 Hours Before Travel

This is the standard recommendation across Aena airports and helps ensure the right support is arranged. For more details, my guide to getting help at the airport details what help you can get, how to book it and what to expect on the day.

Use the DPNA Code for Autism or Developmental Disabilities

DPNA is the airline code often used for autistic passengers and those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. New to the DPNA code? My guide tells you exactly what DPNA is, who should use it and how to add it to your booking.

Ask for the Hidden Disabilities Badge

Arrive Early

Aena recommends arriving at least 2.5 hours before departure when using PRM services. PRM is one of the codes an airport or airline uses, my guide tells you about all of the codes airports and airlines use and what they mean.

Confirm With Both Airline and Airport

Your airline usually adds the SSR code, but checking both sides avoids problems. A SSR code is a special service request and each type of request has a four letter code that is added to the passenger booking. Learn more about disability codes used by airports and airlines in my guide.

Back up Your Booking in PRM Assist

Use the PRM Assist app to make a special assistance booking – this backs up your request for help and gives you a record of it you can access anytime on your phone. If you are new to PRM Assist, my guide explains what it is and how to use it.

Spain is one of the easiest European destinations for accessible air travel because the majority of airports follow the same Aena system. Once you understand how the Barrier Free service works, travelling through Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Tenerife, Palma or smaller regional airports becomes much simpler.
Spain has made major progress in improving accessibility across its transport network. For families travelling with autistic children, mobility needs, sensory sensitivities or additional support requirements, this can make a huge difference when navigating a new country. From high-speed trains with dedicated assistance services to accessible metro systems and low-floor buses, Spain is one of the more manageable European countries when it comes to getting around.

While accessibility can vary slightly between regions and older historic areas, most major cities and transport networks have invested heavily in making travel easier for everyone. Planning ahead, understanding the services available and knowing where to ask for help can make the journey much smoother.

Airports and Air Travel in Spain

Most major Spanish airports are operated by Aena and offer assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility and additional needs. This assistance can include help navigating the airport, priority boarding, support with luggage and guidance from arrival to baggage collection. Instead of the Sunflower Lanyard, Spanish airports now use the Aena hidden disabilities badge.

Assistance is available for travellers with mobility needs, visual or hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities or hidden disabilities. It can be requested through your airline when booking or added later through the airport assistance service. I have a guide dedicated to special assistance for Spain’s airports where you’ll find a link to the accessibility department directly for each airport.

Spanish airports are generally well equipped with lifts, ramps, accessible toilets and wide security lanes. Larger airports such as Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca are particularly well organised for accessible travel.

If you are travelling with equipment such as a wheelchair, mobility scooter or specialist medical equipment, check airline rules before travelling. Battery restrictions, size limits and advance notification requirements can vary between airlines.

Explore:

What is the DPNA code?

Train Travel in Spain With Kids

Spain’s national rail network, operated by Renfe, is one of the easiest ways to travel between cities. High-speed AVE trains connect major destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga and Zaragoza and are generally very accessible.

Renfe operates a service called Atendo which provides assistance for passengers who need support when travelling by train. Staff can help passengers board and disembark trains, navigate stations and find their seats.

Read: Atendo by Renfe Service Guide

Many high-speed trains have dedicated wheelchair spaces, adapted toilets and accessible seating areas. Staff are trained to assist passengers with mobility needs and the boarding process is usually well organised.

When booking train travel, it is helpful to request assistance in advance so staff are aware of your needs. Some stations require a small amount of notice to organise boarding support.

Train stations in larger cities are generally accessible with lifts, ramps and step-free access. However, smaller regional stations may be less modern, so it is worth checking accessibility details before travelling.

Metro Systems in Spain

Many Spanish cities have metro networks which are becoming increasingly accessible. Barcelona and Madrid in particular have invested heavily in accessibility improvements.

Barcelona’s metro system is one of the most accessible in Europe. The majority of stations have lifts, wide ticket barriers and tactile guidance for visually impaired passengers. Audio announcements and clear signage make navigation easier for many travellers.

Madrid’s metro network is larger and older but has also made significant accessibility improvements. Many stations have lifts and accessible entry points, although some older stations still require step access.

Metro systems can be busy during peak commuting hours, so if your child struggles with crowds or sensory overload it may be worth travelling outside of rush hour.

City Buses in Spain

City buses are often one of the easiest ways to get around Spanish cities with accessibility needs. Most buses are low-floor vehicles with extendable ramps that allow wheelchair or pushchair access.

There are designated wheelchair spaces inside the bus, and drivers are usually trained to assist with boarding when needed. Bus networks in cities such as Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid are fully accessible.

For families travelling with autistic children, buses can sometimes feel calmer than underground systems because they offer natural light, clearer surroundings and easier exits if needed.

Trams and Light Rail Across Spain

Several Spanish cities operate modern tram or light rail systems which are designed with accessibility in mind. These vehicles usually have level boarding, wide doors and dedicated wheelchair spaces.

Cities including Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza and Alicante all operate tram networks that are widely used by both locals and visitors.

Because tram stops are at street level and journeys are often quieter than metro systems, they can be a good option for families who want a slower and more predictable way to travel around a city.

Accessible Taxis and Private Transfers in Spain

In most major Spanish cities you can book wheelchair-accessible taxis. These vehicles have ramps and secure spaces for wheelchair users and are designed to make transfers easier for travellers with mobility needs.

Accessible taxis can sometimes be booked through local taxi apps or by contacting taxi companies directly. In tourist areas many hotels can also help arrange accessible transport.

Private transfers are another option if public transport feels overwhelming or if you are travelling with multiple children and equipment.

Tips for Travelling on Public Transport with Autistic Kids in Spain

Planning ahead can make public transport in Spain much easier when travelling with autistic children or children with sensory sensitivities.

Choose accommodation close to a transport hub so you can minimise long walks or multiple transfers. Look at routes in advance so you know which stations have lifts and which entrances to use. One way to do this easily is to set up Google maps to use accessible routes so it takes you to elevators instead of escalators, roads instead of steps etc.

Avoid peak commuter hours if possible. Early mornings, mid-morning and early afternoon are usually quieter times on public transport.

Consider using buses or trams rather than metro systems if your child prefers open spaces and natural light.

Carry sensory supports such as headphones, snacks or fidget toys to help during waiting times or longer journeys.

If your child needs extra time boarding or moving through a station, don’t hesitate to ask transport staff for help. Assistance services are widely available and staff are generally supportive when they understand a family’s needs.

Accessibility in Historic Areas

One thing to keep in mind when travelling around Spain is that many cities have very old historic centres. These areas can include cobbled streets, narrow pavements and steeper slopes.

However, many cities have added ramps, smoother pathways and accessible routes where possible. It is often possible to explore historic areas by approaching from the more modern side of the neighbourhood.

Checking maps in advance or using accessible route planning tools can make navigating these areas much easier.

Read: How to set up Google maps accessibility feature

Spain is steadily improving its accessibility and many transport systems are now designed with inclusivity in mind. While there may still be challenges in older areas or smaller towns, most major cities offer reliable and accessible ways to get around.

For families travelling with autistic children or other accessibility needs, the key is preparation. Understanding the transport options, requesting assistance when needed and choosing calmer travel times can make exploring Spain far more comfortable.

Once you are familiar with the system, Spain’s trains, buses and metro networks can become a convenient and manageable way to explore the country.

Travelling through airports can be stressful under the best of circumstances — and even more so if someone in your party has a hidden or invisible disability (such as autism spectrum disorder, sensory-sensitivity, anxiety, etc.). The Spanish airport operator Aena (which runs Spain’s civil airports) has introduced a tool designed to make the experience smoother: the Hidden/Invisible Disability Badge (sometimes called the “Invisible Disabilities Badge”).

In this post I’ll cover:

What the badge is and how it works.

Which airports in the Aena network currently accept it.

How to apply for one before you travel (and some tips).

What is the Aena Hidden Disability Badge?

The badge is an official identification issued by Aena for travellers who have a hidden or invisible disability — that is, someone whose difficulties may not be obvious at first sight (e.g., sensory overload, anxiety in busy places, difficulties with unexpected changes) but who may need a little more time, patience or support when moving through the airport.

Here are some key points about how it works:

The badge is not a fast-track or bypass of airport procedures. It doesn’t mean you skip security, nor does it replace other assistance services.

What the badge does do: It signals to airport staff that the badge-holder may benefit from a bit more understanding, maybe more time, maybe less noise or queue stress. It may allow access to a security checkpoint for families / people with reduced mobility (PRMs) if such a lane exists; if not, then you’ll be given priority through the general lane as much as possible.

It is valid only for the day of the flight at the airport(s) specified. You will need to request it in advance and present it (printed or digital) to be able to access support.

Because it’s aimed at hidden disabilities (rather than visible mobility impairments), it helps staff understand behaviour that might otherwise seem unusual (for example, someone needing to wait or pause, or avoid crowds).

It’s separate from the “Barrier Free/Persons with Reduced Mobility” (PRM) service. If you or someone you travel with has visible reduced mobility (wheelchair, etc.), you should also arrange standard PRM assistance. The badge can complement, but does not replace that service.

In short: if you have an invisible disability and will be using a Spanish airport in the Aena network, the badge is a helpful tool to improve your airport experience — less rush, more understanding, smoother transitions.

Which Airports Accept the Badge?

Firstly, Aena manages a large network of airports across Spain. The full list of airports in the Aena network is available on their website. Please be aware that the name of the airport is not always listed as the name of the city e.g. I was searching for Madrid by typing M and failing, but the airport is actually named Adolfo Suárez Madrid‑Barajas Airport so I needed to be searching for A.

However, not all of these airports currently list the Invisible Disabilities Badge as available. According to Aena’s own page, the badge is available at a defined list of airports.

Here is a representative list of airports where the badge is currently accepted, based on the most up-to-date information:

Adolfo Suárez Madrid‑Barajas Airport (MAD) — Madrid

Alicante‑Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC) — Alicante/Elche

Bilbao Airport (BIO)

César Manrique‑Lanzarote Airport (ACE) — Lanzarote

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE)

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)

Ibiza Airport (IBZ)

Internacional Región de Murcia Airport (RMU)

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona‑El Prat Airport (BCN)

Málaga‑Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)

Menorca Airport (MAH)

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)

Reus Airport (REU)

Sevilla Airport (SVQ)

Santiago‑Rosalía de Castro Airport (SCQ)

Tenerife Norte‑Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (TFN)

Tenerife Sur Airport (TFS)

Valencia Airport (VLC)

Vigo Airport (VGO)

Important note: Because Aena operates many smaller regional airports, not every Aena-managed airport may yet have the badge process fully implemented. If you are flying via a smaller airport, check its “People with special needs / Hidden disabilities” section on the Aena website ahead of time.

I have a seperate guide which links out to the special assistance department for all of Spain’s airports.

How to Apply for the Badge

Here’s how to get the badge in advance of your travel day:

Visit the Aena website’s “Invisible Disabilities Badge” page (you can often find it under “Passengers / Travellers / Passengers with special needs / Hidden disabilities”.)

Complete the online request form. You will need to:

Pick the airport (or “other” if not listed)

Provide passenger details and flight information.

Accept the terms and conditions.

Submit. Aena will issue the badge (often as a digital PDF) which you can print or show on your mobile device.

On the day of travel: present the badge at the security checkpoint / relevant desk to request the facilitated access. Showing that you have the badge gives staff the signal to provide understanding or priority.

Always remember: you still must follow all security rules and check-in times etc. The badge does not remove the need for full compliance with airport procedures.

Tips and Reminders:

Apply early: So you have the badge ready (printed or on screen) ahead of your travel.

One badge per passenger (or party): If you’re travelling with someone who will carry the badge, that should suffice for the group.

Check the airport: Even if your flight is with an Aena airport that accepts the badge, check whether there are dedicated security lanes (families/PRMs) at that airport. If not, you may still go through the standard lane but with staff aware of your situation.

Prepare for your child / companion: If you’re travelling with a neurodivergent child or someone who may become overwhelmed, plan ahead for arrival, time for check-in, gates, maybe quieter areas, sensory breaks. Seeing the badge as part of the toolkit (not the whole solution) helps.

Carry supporting information: If your child or you have a diagnosis or documentation that explains a hidden disability, carry it (though it may not be required). The badge is the signal — but being prepared helps. We keep a copy of these things on a Google drive so we can pull it up if we need it, but also if we happen to lose the phone it is on we can access it from another device and log out the lost device so it loses access.

Communicate early: As you’re booking flights, check your airline’s assistance service and the airport’s services for hidden disabilities. Sometimes telling the airline ahead can help.

Double-check connection airports: If you connect through another Spanish airport (even if departure and destination are fine), check whether that airport accepts the badge.

Language: The Aena site often has English versions, but be aware of Spanish terms: “discapacidades invisibles”, “distintivo de discapacidades invisibles”.

Not a magical “skip everything” pass: The badge helps with access/understanding, but you still needs to allow plenty of time, do the check-in/security procedures, manage boarding etc.

For families travelling with neurodivergent children (for example autistic children) or adults with hidden disabilities, managing an airport is not just about the flight—it’s about sensory regulation, predictability, waiting, security procedures, noise, bright lights, crowds, transit time. The Hidden Disability Badge from Aena is one of those travel tools that can help shift the experience from just simply surviving the airport, to managing an airport with the right support.

If you’ve used other schemes (for example the Sunflower Lanyard) you’ll note that the Aena badge is tailored for the Spanish airport context. Some recent sources say that Spanish airports no longer recognise the Sunflower lanyard as sufficient in themselves—that is, the Aena badge is the recommended option. That means if you fly into or out of Spain via an Aena airport and want the hidden-disability support, get the badge in advance.

Getting To Ibiza With Kids

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is well-equipped with accessible facilities, including sensory-friendly waiting areas and priority boarding for families. Many flights from major European cities are direct, making travel easier for children with special needs. Upon arrival, consider pre-booking a taxi or a private transfer to your accommodation to avoid long waits.

We were able to fly directly to Ibiza from Edinburgh airport, Scotland.

When traveling from Ibiza Airport (IBZ) to your hotel, you have several transportation options:

Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the airport and offer a quick and convenient way to reach your hotel. They operate on a meter, and fares vary depending on your destination. We took a taxi, I remember it being very difficult because the driver only spoke Spanish and we only spoke English.

Bus: The Ibiza Airport bus service connects the airport with major towns like Ibiza Town, San Antonio, and Santa Eulalia. It’s a cost-effective option but may require additional transfers. You can book the shuttle bus on GetYourGuide here.

Private Transfer: Pre-booked private transfers provide a stress-free, direct ride to your hotel with personalized service. You can book luxury private transfers online before you arrive here.

Car Rental: Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace. Multiple car rental agencies operate at the airport.

Shuttle Service: Some hotels offer complimentary or paid shuttle services from the airport. Check with your accommodation for availability.

Where to Stay in Ibiza With Autistic Children

Ibiza offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations, including resorts and apartments that cater to children with autism. Look for places that offer quiet rooms, kitchen facilities, and on-site activities. Some resorts provide kids’ clubs with trained staff who understand the needs of neurodiverse children. Staying near quieter beaches or in more secluded parts of the island can also help create a more relaxing environment.

During our stay we were in San Antonio.

Family-Friendly Activities in Ibiza

Ibiza is known for its natural beauty and serene environment, perfect for sensory-sensitive children.

Beaches

Spend time at one of the island’s many calm beaches like Cala Llonga or Santa Eulalia, where the gentle waves and soft sand provide a soothing experience. Consider doing a tour of the beaches on Ibiza to make the most of your time there.

Nature Reserves

Exploring the island’s nature reserves, such as Ses Salines, can offer peaceful walks in stunning landscapes.

Ibiza Town

Stroll through the historic Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was a highlight of our trip to Ibiza – we spent the entire day in Ibiza Town before flying back to Scotland. You can actually book a guided tour of Ibiza Town on GetYourGuide – this would be a fantastic option with there being so much to see.

Aguamar Water Park

Enjoy slides and pools, perfect for a fun-filled day. My kids absolutely love water, but I know water can be difficult for some autistic children so be wary of that before you decide where to go.

Visit Hippy Markets

Discover crafts and enjoy live music at Las Dalias or Punta Arabi. We didn’t manage to visit a hippy market in Ibiza but we have seen them in other parts of Spain and really love seeing all of the offerings the markets have. You can book a tour which includes a stop at a Hippy Market here via GetYourGuide.

Go on a Boat Trip

Take a family-friendly boat tour around the island. It is so easy to book a boat trip – you can do it online in advance with a reliable company like GetYourGuide. I think this boat trip looks great, it goes over to Formentera – the smallest of Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Cave Exploration at Can Marça

Explore fascinating stalactites and stalagmites in this ancient cave. You can do a guided tour, which I really recommend for safety reasons – you can book in advance here. Alternatively, consider a sea cave tour.

San Antonio Beaches

We found a secluded little beach in San Antonio near our hotel that was absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous yellow sand, quiet – not another person around.

Getting Around Ibiza With Autistic Children

Public transportation in Ibiza includes buses and ferries, but renting a car might be the best option for families needing flexibility. Having your own vehicle allows you to explore the island at your own pace, which can be particularly beneficial if your child requires breaks or quiet time. Many car rental services offer child seats and GPS to help with navigation. Remember to plan your routes to avoid traffic, especially during peak season.

Is Ibiza Autism-Friendly?

Ibiza, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches, is also making efforts to become more inclusive for individuals with autism.

Things That Make Ibiza Stand Out for Families

Some hotels and resorts in Ibiza are beginning to offer autism-friendly services, such as quieter areas, sensory-friendly activities, and staff training on how to support guests with autism. Certain tourist attractions may also provide information or accommodations for visitors with special needs, though this is not yet widespread.

Ibiza has medical facilities and professionals who can provide care for individuals with autism, but specialized services may be limited compared to mainland Spain. Families or individuals with autism may need to plan ahead to ensure access to the necessary healthcare services.

Ibiza is known for its lively events, but there are also quieter, family-friendly options available.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in. use my Spain travel guide to plan your trip to Spain with autistic kids.

Sensory Tools: Bring along sensory tools and comfort items that help manage sensory needs, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory toys, and a sensory toolkit.

Clear Communication: Ensure that everyone involved in the trip understands the needs and preferences of the neurodiverse individual. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the travel experience. Consider using PECS or an AAC. We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. Consider using our Spain PECS to add to your experience.

Safety: Consider getting an autism card for your child, or even better – use our emergency passport for medical information and important contacts. Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you. TinyTags also feature a location alert to help you find your child.

Ibiza can be overwhelming with its lively nightlife and crowded tourist spots, so it’s important to plan sensory-friendly activities. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating in quieter areas, which can be more comfortable for children with sensory sensitivities.

Ibiza is a beautiful and accommodating destination for families with autistic children. With thoughtful planning, you can ensure a memorable and relaxing holiday. From quiet beaches to sensory-friendly accommodations, Ibiza offers a variety of options to suit your family’s needs. Enjoy the island’s natural beauty and make lasting memories with your loved ones.

Getting To Mallorca With Autistic Children

Reaching Mallorca is relatively easy with several transport options available. The most common way to get to the island is by flying into Palma De Mallorca Airport (PMI), which has direct flights from major cities across Europe and beyond. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from mainland Spain, with services operating from Barcelona, Valencia, and Denia. The ferry ride can be a scenic and enjoyable part of your journey, especially for children who enjoy being on the water.

For our visit to Mallorca, we flew from Glasgow Airport to Palma De Mallorca. We then rented cars to drive our family over to Alcudia and for exploring during our stay there.

Where to Stay in Mallorca With Kids

Choosing the right accommodation is crucial when traveling with children, especially those with autism. Mallorca offers a variety of family-friendly resorts and hotels that cater to different needs.

Palma Nova is a popular area known for its family-friendly atmosphere and range of accommodations, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly hotels. The area offers numerous restaurants, shops, and activities within walking distance, making it convenient for families.

Alcudia is another excellent choice, known for its long, sandy beach and calm waters. Many resorts here offer family-friendly amenities and are located close to local attractions, such as the Alcudia Old Town and the nearby nature reserve. This is where we stayed during our visit

Santa Ponsa provides a quieter atmosphere while still offering plenty of activities for families. This area has a range of accommodations and is known for its beautiful beach and family-friendly facilities.

We went to Mallorca with my family: my Step-sister and her daughter, my 2 Step-brothers my Dad & Step-mum, my Step-aunt and my half sister, her husband at the time and their daughter. We rented a huge house near Alcudia that was big enough for all of us.

Getting Around Mallorca with Autistic Children

Navigating Mallorca requires some planning to ensure a smooth experience, especially when traveling with autistic children. Here are some transport options:

Taxis and Private Transfers: Taxis and private transfer services are readily available and offer a convenient way to travel around the island. Pre-booking these services can help reduce stress and ensure a comfortable journey.

Car Rentals: Renting a car can provide the flexibility to explore Mallorca at your own pace. Many rental agencies offer vehicles with GPS and child seats, making it easier to navigate the island with children.

Public Buses: Mallorca has an extensive and reliable public bus network that connects major towns and tourist areas. Buses are an affordable option, but can be crowded during peak times.

Bikes: Renting bikes can be a fun and active way to explore the island, especially in areas with dedicated bike paths. It offers a different perspective and can be an enjoyable activity for children.

Learn more about this in my guide to accessible transport in Spain.

Is Mallorca Autism-Friendly?

Mallorca is increasingly becoming autism-friendly, with growing awareness, improved accessibility, and a range of services catering to individuals with autism. The island’s natural beauty, quieter environments, and welcoming culture can provide a positive experience for those with sensory sensitivities. However, the level of autism-friendliness can vary depending on the location, so it’s advisable to plan ahead, choose appropriate accommodations, and reach out to local organizations for support.

Things That Make Mallorca Stand Out for Families

Public transportation in Mallorca, including buses, trains, and ferries, is generally accessible and can accommodate travelers with special needs. However, during busy times, public transport can be crowded and noisy, so planning travel during quieter hours may be beneficial.

Palma de Mallorca Airport offers special assistance services for passengers with disabilities, including those with autism. This can include help with navigating the airport, boarding, and other travel-related needs.

Some hotels and resorts in Mallorca have begun offering autism-friendly services, such as quieter rooms, sensory-friendly activities, and staff trained to assist guests with special needs. Some tourist attractions, such as museums and theme parks, may also offer accommodations like quiet hours or special passes for visitors with disabilities.

During peak tourist season, some areas can become crowded and noisy, which may be challenging for individuals with autism. Planning visits during off-peak times or choosing less crowded locations can help create a more comfortable experience.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

Getting To Barcelona With Autistic Kids

Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is well-connected to the city centre by various transport options. Whether you prefer convenience, speed, or cost-effectiveness, there’s a suitable choice for everyone. Here’s a detailed guide to help you choose the best way to get from Barcelona Airport to the city centre.

Aerobus: The Aerobus is a convenient and popular option for many travelers. It runs between the airport and the city centre, stopping at major locations such as Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Espanya, and Gran Via. It comes every 5-10 minutes, and takes about 35 minutes to get to the city.

Metro: Barcelona’s Metro Line L9 Sud connects the airport to the city’s metro network. While it doesn’t go directly to the city centre, you can transfer to other lines at various stations. You can expect it to come every 7-10 minutes and it should take between 30 to 40 minutes to Barcelona.

Train (Rodalies RENFE): The R2 Nord Line of the Rodalies RENFE train service runs from Terminal 2 to the city centre, stopping at major stations such as Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, and Clot-Aragó. It comes every 30 minutes and takes about 25 mins.

Taxis: Taxis are readily available outside both terminals and provide a door-to-door service, making them a convenient option, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are traveling with a group. You can expect a taxi from El Prat to take about 30 minutes.

Private Transfers: Private transfer services can be booked in advance and provide a personalized and comfortable journey from the airport to your destination in the city. As with a taxi, it should take about 30 minutes.

Ride-Sharing Services: Ride-sharing services like Uber and Cabify operate in Barcelona and can be a convenient option for getting to the city centre. Again, about 30 minutes is what you should expect of the journey.

Buses: Several public bus lines connect the airport to various parts of the city. These buses are a cost-effective option and provide access to different areas that might not be directly accessible by train or metro.

For more transport ideas in Spain, check out my guide to accessible transport in Spain.

Where To Stay in Barcelona With Kids

The first time I visited Barcelona, I stayed outside of Barcelona city when I visited, in both Calella and Gava Beach. I chose to do this because I was on more of an all-inclusive trip with my Mum at the time and we would travel into Barcelona when we wanted to explore.

On my second stay in the area, we chose to stay very close to Las Ramblas in Barcelona because it was easy to reach by public transport and easy from there to get to the cruise ship port for the next part of our trip.

Family-Friendly Things to do in Barcelona

This list is by no means exhaustive, and Barcelona has plenty more to offer families. If you’re looking for even more inspiration, Maerle, who has lived in Catalonia for over 10 years, has put together an excellent guide to fun things to do in Barcelona with kids that’s well worth a read.

Barcelona Gothic Quarters

We did a walking tour of Barcelona Gothic Quarters. We really enjoyed this because the tour guide took us to so many quiet and beautiful spots which allowed us to do a tour of a super busy area of Barcelona with plenty of quite breaks which worked really well for our autistic son.

How To Get Around Barcelona With Autistic Children

In Barcelona as a cruise stop, we did nothing but walk and take the little bus that goes to the cruise port for passengers. When I stayed in nearby towns I took public transport only. Public transport in Spain is easy to figure out as long as you have some patience and can use Google and Google Maps you’ll be able to navigate Costa Brava with public transport.

Tips for a Smooth Experience in Spain

Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in. Use my Spain travel guide to plan your family-friendly trip to Spain and the Canary Islands.

Consider using our Barcelona PECS and Spain PECS to add to your experience.

Is Barcelona Autism-Friendly?

Barcelona is a fairly autism-friendly city, with a range of services, attractions, and resources designed to accommodate individuals on the autism spectrum. The city’s focus on accessibility, coupled with its cultural sensitivity and public awareness, makes it a welcoming destination for families and individuals with autism. However, like any large city, planning ahead and making use of available resources can greatly enhance the experience.

Things That Make Barcelona Stand Out for Families With Kids

Barcelona’s public transportation system, including buses, metro, and trams, is generally accessible and can accommodate passengers with special needs. The metro system is particularly well-equipped with elevators, ramps, and other accessibility features. Some transport services offer assistance for travelers with disabilities, and planning routes in advance can help ensure a smoother experience.

The city is relatively easy to navigate, with clearly marked streets and public spaces that are well-maintained. For those who prefer quieter travel options, taxis or private transport can provide a more controlled environment.

Despite being a bustling city, Barcelona has plenty of quiet parks, gardens, and beachfront areas where individuals can relax and escape the hustle and bustle. Parc de la Ciutadella and the Montjuïc Hill area are examples of places where families can find a bit of tranquility.

Barcelona is home to several autism-friendly attractions and services. Many museums, parks, and cultural institutions offer sensory-friendly hours, quiet spaces, and staff trained to assist visitors with special needs. For example, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum and the Aquarium of Barcelona are known for being accommodating to visitors with autism.

Even a short trip to Barcelona can be really enjoyable and exciting for autistic children. There are a number of family-friendly and sensory-friendly experiences in Barcelona and plenty of open spaces, too. Using our guide to Barcelona should help you make your trip there more organised and enjoyable for autistic kids.
