Getting To Ibiza With Kids
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is well-equipped with accessible facilities, including sensory-friendly waiting areas and priority boarding for families. Many flights from major European cities are direct, making travel easier for children with special needs. Upon arrival, consider pre-booking a taxi or a private transfer to your accommodation to avoid long waits.
We were able to fly directly to Ibiza from Edinburgh airport, Scotland.
When traveling from Ibiza Airport (IBZ) to your hotel, you have several transportation options:
- Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the airport and offer a quick and convenient way to reach your hotel. They operate on a meter, and fares vary depending on your destination. We took a taxi, I remember it being very difficult because the driver only spoke Spanish and we only spoke English.
- Bus: The Ibiza Airport bus service connects the airport with major towns like Ibiza Town, San Antonio, and Santa Eulalia. It’s a cost-effective option but may require additional transfers. You can book the shuttle bus on GetYourGuide here.
- Private Transfer: Pre-booked private transfers provide a stress-free, direct ride to your hotel with personalized service. You can book luxury private transfers online before you arrive here.
- Car Rental: Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace. Multiple car rental agencies operate at the airport.
- Shuttle Service: Some hotels offer complimentary or paid shuttle services from the airport. Check with your accommodation for availability.
Where to Stay in Ibiza With Autistic Children
Ibiza offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations, including resorts and apartments that cater to children with autism. Look for places that offer quiet rooms, kitchen facilities, and on-site activities. Some resorts provide kids’ clubs with trained staff who understand the needs of neurodiverse children. Staying near quieter beaches or in more secluded parts of the island can also help create a more relaxing environment.

Beaches
Spend time at one of the island’s many calm beaches like Cala Llonga or Santa Eulalia, where the gentle waves and soft sand provide a soothing experience. Consider doing a tour of the beaches on Ibiza to make the most of your time there.
Nature Reserves
Exploring the island’s nature reserves, such as Ses Salines, can offer peaceful walks in stunning landscapes.
Ibiza Town
Stroll through the historic Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was a highlight of our trip to Ibiza – we spent the entire day in Ibiza Town before flying back to Scotland. Aguamar Water Park
Enjoy slides and pools, perfect for a fun-filled day. My kids absolutely love water, but I know water can be difficult for some autistic children so be wary of that before you decide where to go.
Visit Hippy Markets
Discover crafts and enjoy live music at Las Dalias or Punta Arabi. We didn’t manage to visit a hippy market in Ibiza but we have seen them in other parts of Spain and really love seeing all of the offerings the markets have. Go on a Boat Trip
Take a family-friendly boat tour around the island. It is so easy to book a boat trip – you can do it online in advance with a reliable company like GetYourGuide. I think this boat trip looks great, it goes over to Formentera – the smallest of Spain’s Balearic Islands.
Cave Exploration at Can Marça
Explore fascinating stalactites and stalagmites in this ancient cave. You can do a guided tour, which I really recommend for safety reasons – you can book in advance here. Alternatively, consider a sea cave tour.
San Antonio Beaches
We found a secluded little beach in San Antonio near our hotel that was absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous yellow sand, quiet – not another person around.
Getting Around Ibiza With Autistic Children
Public transportation in Ibiza includes buses and ferries, but renting a car might be the best option for families needing flexibility. Having your own vehicle allows you to explore the island at your own pace, which can be particularly beneficial if your child requires breaks or quiet time. Many car rental services offer child seats and GPS to help with navigation. Remember to plan your routes to avoid traffic, especially during peak season.
We took a car from the airport to our hotel in San Antonio, and then stayed in the San Antonio area until it was time to fly home. We walked everywhere during our time there.
Is Ibiza Autism-Friendly?
Ibiza, known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches, is also making efforts to become more inclusive for individuals with autism.
Things That Make Ibiza Stand Out for Families
- Some hotels and resorts in Ibiza are beginning to offer autism-friendly services, such as quieter areas, sensory-friendly activities, and staff training on how to support guests with autism. Certain tourist attractions may also provide information or accommodations for visitors with special needs, though this is not yet widespread.
- Ibiza has medical facilities and professionals who can provide care for individuals with autism, but specialized services may be limited compared to mainland Spain. Families or individuals with autism may need to plan ahead to ensure access to the necessary healthcare services.
- Ibiza is known for its lively events, but there are also quieter, family-friendly options available.
Tips for a Smooth Experience

- Sensory Tools: Bring along sensory tools and comfort items that help manage sensory needs, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory toys, and a sensory toolkit.
- Clear Communication: Ensure that everyone involved in the trip understands the needs and preferences of the neurodiverse individual. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the travel experience. Consider using PECS or an AAC. We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. - Safety: Consider getting an autism card for your child, or even better – use our emergency passport for medical information and important contacts. Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you.
