If you’re visiting Keelung with kids, Zhongzheng District is one of the best places to start. It’s where you’ll find dramatic coastal views, colourful temples, and some of the most unique attractions in northern Taiwan – all within a relatively compact area. For a trip to Keelung, my guide to visiting Keelung with kids is a great place to start.
What makes Zhongzheng stand out is the mix of nature and culture. One minute you’re walking along rugged cliffs overlooking the ocean, the next you’re exploring peaceful temples or interactive attractions that work well for children.
For families with autistic or sensory-sensitive children, Zhongzheng can be a great choice if you plan your days carefully. There are open spaces, quieter corners, and plenty of opportunities to step away from crowds when needed.
Getting To Zhongzheng (Keelung) With Kids
Zhongzheng District is located in Keelung, just northeast of Taipei, making it an easy day trip or overnight stay.
The simplest option is to take a train from Taipei to Keelung Station, which takes around 30–40 minutes. From there, taxis or local buses can take you into Zhongzheng. Learn more about accessible transport in Taiwan from my guide.
If you’re travelling with kids – or managing sensory needs – taxis are often the easiest and least stressful way to get around once you arrive.
Where To Stay in Zhongzheng With Kids
Most families stay near Keelung Harbour or close to Zhongzheng’s coastal attractions.
Look for hotels that offer:
- Larger family rooms
- Quiet surroundings away from the night market
- Easy access to taxis
I would recommend Evergreen Laurel Hotel Keelung – it is clean, has a kids playroom, has large family rooms and both a pool and games rooms.
Evergreen Laural Hotel Keelung:

If your child struggles with noise, avoid staying too close to Keelung Night Market, as it gets very busy in the evenings.
Family-Friendly Activities in Zhongzheng
Heping Island Park
One of the best places in Keelung for families. Think natural rock pools, ocean views, and space to explore.
There are walking paths, shallow water areas, and plenty of room for kids to move freely. It’s also one of the calmer attractions if you visit early.
Zhongzheng Park
Zhongzheng Park is one of Keelung’s best-known green spaces and a surprisingly good place for families who need a break from the busier parts of the city. Set on a hillside overlooking the harbour, the park is known for its large white Guanyin statue, temple areas and panoramic coastal views.

There are walking paths, open spaces and smaller play areas where children can move around more freely compared to the crowded streets below. While some sections involve stairs and uphill walking, the calmer atmosphere and fresh air can make it feel much more regulating than central Keelung. Visiting earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon is usually the quietest and most comfortable time for sensory-sensitive children.
Zhengbin Fishing Port Colour Houses
Often compared to Venice, these bright, colourful buildings are a fun and easy stop with kids.
It’s a quick visit, but visually engaging – great for photos and a gentle wander without too much stimulation.
National Museum of Marine Science & Technology
This is a fantastic option if you need an indoor activity.
There are interactive exhibits, large open spaces, and plenty to keep children engaged. It’s also air-conditioned, which helps on hot or overwhelming days.
Keelung Maritime Plaza
A wide, open space near the harbour where kids can run around safely.

You’ll find street performers, boats, and plenty of seating. It’s a good reset spot if your child needs a break between activities. It is also a great spot to snap some photos – and I have a guide dedicated to the best photo spots in Keelung so you can save time and build up that photo album.
Bisha Harbour
A quieter harbour area with seafood restaurants and open views.
It’s less crowded than central Keelung and ideal if you want a slower-paced afternoon.
Keelung Coastal Walks
Zhongzheng is perfect for scenic walks. Coastal paths offer fresh air, space, and incredible views.
These walks can be a great sensory reset – especially for children who benefit from movement and open environments.
Keelung Night Market (Nearby)
Just outside Zhongzheng, this is one of Taiwan’s most famous night markets.

It’s vibrant, busy, and full of smells, lights, and noise – so it won’t suit every child. But if you time your visit earlier in the evening, it can be more manageable.
Heping Island Coastal Area
If you do one thing in Zhongzheng, Keelung make it this.
The combination of sea air, open space, and natural surroundings makes it one of the most regulating environments in the area.
There’s room to move, fewer crowds than central Keelung, and plenty of quiet corners to decompress.
Getting Around Zhongzheng With Autistic Children
Transport in Keelung is straightforward, but not always sensory-friendly.
Buses can be busy and unpredictable, so taxis are often the better option for families. They’re affordable and remove a lot of stress from navigating routes.
Plan shorter travel distances where possible, and build in breaks between activities to avoid overwhelm.
I have a seperate guide dedicated to explaining the accessible transport options in Taiwan to save you searching.
Is Zhongzheng Autism-Friendly?
Zhongzheng can be a really positive destination for autistic children—if you approach it with the right expectations.
It’s not fully adapted or specifically designed for neurodivergent travellers, but it offers something just as valuable: space.
Things That Make Zhongzheng Stand Out For Families
- Coastal environments that feel calming and open
- A mix of indoor and outdoor activities
- Easy access from Taipei without long travel times
- Opportunities to avoid crowds if you plan ahead
Tips for a Smooth Experience in Taiwan With Kids
- Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact any hotels or attractions to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in. To get ahead on planning your trip to Taiwan, head to my Taiwan travel hub where you will find all of my guides and advice for visiting Taiwan with autistic children.
- Sensory Tools: Bring along sensory tools and comfort items that help manage sensory needs, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory toys, and a sensory toolkit.
- Clear Communication: Ensure that everyone involved in the trip understands the needs and preferences of the neurodiverse individual. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the travel experience. Consider using PECS or an AAC. We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. Consider using our Taiwan PECS for a more personalised travel experience in Taipei and Taiwan.
- Safety: Consider getting an autism card for your child, or even better – use our emergency passport for medical information and important contacts. Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you. TinyTags also feature a location alert to help you find your child.
