Airports in Greece: Special Assistance Deparment Links

Airports in Greece special assistance department links

Travelling through Greece with a disability, reduced mobility, autism, hidden disability or additional support needs should be straightforward when you know where to look. Greek airports follow EU Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2006, which means airports must provide free assistance for passengers with disabilities and passengers with reduced mobility (PRM).

This can include wheelchair assistance, help through check-in and security, boarding support, assistance with baggage, help for hidden disabilities, and support for passengers travelling with autism, sensory needs or medical equipment. My guide breaks down what help you can get at the airport if you have a disability or illness.

Most airports ask that you request assistance through your airline at least 48 hours before travel. You can also book it via the PRM Assist app.

This guide lists the main airports across Greece and links to their Special Assistance, PRM or accessibility support pages.

Quick Wins For Using Special Assistance in Greece

Request special assistance at least 48 hours before departure through your airline
• Arrive early, especially during busy summer months
• If using mobility equipment, tell your airline the exact dimensions and battery type
• Many Greek island airports are smaller and may use ambulifts rather than air bridges
• Assistance is free
and covered by EU passenger rights
• Hidden disabilities and autism support can usually be arranged even if not clearly listed online

What Special Assistance Usually Includes

Depending on the airport and your needs, support may include:

• Help from car park or drop-off to check-in
• Wheelchair assistance through the airport
• Priority help through check-in, passport control and security
• Boarding via ambulift where no jet bridge is available
• Help with baggage reclaim
• Support for passengers with autism or hidden disabilities
• Assistance for visually impaired or hearing impaired travellers
• Help travelling with oxygen, medication or medical devices

Athens International Airport has designated PRM assistance points and dedicated assistance coordination offices throughout the terminal . My guide to getting help at the airport breaks down exactly what help you can recieve and how to book it.

How to Book Assistance

You should normally request help through your airline, not directly with the airport.

Most airlines including Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air ask for at least 48 hours’ notice for wheelchair or mobility support .

When booking, tell them:

• whether you can walk short distances
• whether you need a full wheelchair service
• whether you travel with your own wheelchair
• if you need help boarding stairs
• if your child has autism or hidden disability needs
• if you need support with medication or medical equipment

I have a guide dedicated to explaining how to book special assistance with Ryanair and easyJet, and a guide about the PRM Assist app you can use to book special assistance.

Greek airports range from huge international hubs like Athens International Airport to tiny island airports with very limited facilities. The level of support can feel very different depending on where you fly from, so planning ahead matters.

For autism families, passengers with hidden disabilities and travellers using mobility aids, booking assistance early can make the airport experience much calmer and far less stressful-especially during the busy summer season when Greek airports are at their busiest.
