MSC Bellissima with autistic children

MSC Bellissima is one of the most modern ships in the MSC Cruises fleet and can be a surprisingly manageable environment for families travelling with autistic children. Although cruise ships are large, they also offer something many autistic children benefit from — structure. Meals happen at predictable times, activities repeat daily and the physical layout of the ship stays the same throughout the journey.

Unlike constantly changing hotel environments, a cruise ship becomes a familiar base. Your child sleeps in the same cabin every night while the destinations change around you.

MSC Bellissima is particularly well suited to families because it combines structured entertainment, multiple quiet areas, family cabins and clear navigation throughout the ship. The indoor promenade with its LED ceiling, multiple dining spaces and large outdoor decks provide a range of sensory environments — meaning you can usually find a space that works for your child.

This page is your step-by-step MSC Bellissima planning guide. Instead of simply listing facilities, it walks you through how to plan a cruise on this ship with an autistic child — from booking the right cabin to understanding embarkation day, choosing suitable activities and reducing unpredictability onboard.

If you follow this in order, you can plan your MSC Bellissima cruise with confidence.

Our itinerary at a glance (Dec 2025)

We have sailed with MSC Bellissima twice, once in Jan 2025 and once in Jan 2026. Both times the stop at Miyakojima has been cancelled due to weather.

  • Day 1 – Keelung (Taiwan) (depart)
  • Day 2 – Miyakojima (Japan) (cancelled due to weather concerns)
  • Day 3 – Naha (Japan)
  • Day 4 – Ishigaki (Japan)
  • Day 5 – Keelung (Taiwan) (arrive)

Step 1: Before You Book – Understanding the Ship and Planning Your Cabin

Before booking a cruise, it helps to understand the structure of the ship itself.

MSC Bellissima is a large cruise ship carrying over 4,000 passengers. While that may sound overwhelming, the ship is divided into clear areas and decks which become familiar quickly.

Key things to understand before booking:

Ship size and layout

MSC Bellissima has:

  • 19 decks
  • Multiple dining venues
  • A large indoor promenade called the Galleria Bellissima
  • Several pools and outdoor decks
  • Theatre entertainment
  • Kids clubs and family spaces
  • Quiet lounge areas

The central promenade runs through the ship and acts as the main navigation point. Once you understand this area, moving around the ship becomes much easier.

Cabin choice matters

Your cabin is your child’s safe space during the cruise. Choosing the right one can significantly affect how manageable the trip feels.

Cabin options include:

Inside cabins:

Yacht club inside cabin:

No windows but usually the most affordable. Good for children who sleep best in complete darkness.

Ocean view cabins:

Window to the outside but no balcony.

Balcony cabins:

MSC Yacht club balcony cabin:

Private outdoor space which can be extremely helpful if your child needs quiet decompression time.

Family cabins:

Some larger cabins connect through an internal door or sleep more guests.

Family cabin 9008:

For many autism families, balcony cabins offer the best balance. They provide fresh air and a quiet retreat without needing to navigate the busy public decks.

Location matters as well. Mid-ship cabins reduce movement if your child experiences motion sickness.

Avoid cabins directly above theatres, nightclubs or busy restaurants if noise sensitivity is an issue.

We have sailed twice on the MSC Bellissima, and have tried two different styles of cabin setup for our family of five:

  • A five-people family cabin (9008)
  • A combination of two cabins in the Yacht Club (14013 and 14015, an internal suite and a balcony suite)

Step 2: Embarkation Day – Managing the First Day on Board

Embarkation day is often the most intense part of a cruise.

Thousands of passengers arrive at the port, luggage is processed and everyone learns the ship layout at the same time. Planning this stage well can reduce stress significantly.

Consider arriving at the port early in your assigned check-in window.

Things to prepare for:

  • Security screening
  • Check-in desks
  • Waiting areas
  • Boarding queues
  • Muster drill

MSC provides staggered arrival times, which helps reduce crowd density. If you are sailing as part of the Yacht Club, you have more flexibility with arrival times and get through check in much more quickly.

If your child has additional needs, contact MSC accessibility services before your cruise to request assistance.

Once onboard, avoid trying to explore everything immediately.

Instead:

  • Locate your cabin
  • Walk the nearest deck areas
  • Identify a quiet lounge or outdoor space
  • Eat something simple
  • Allow decompression time

The ship will still be there tomorrow.

Step 3: Understanding the Layout of MSC Bellissima

Cruise ships can initially feel confusing, but MSC Bellissima has a fairly logical structure.

Key areas include:

Galleria Bellissima:

The indoor promenade running through the centre of the ship. It features shops, cafés and a huge LED ceiling display. It can be visually impressive but sometimes busy.

If your child enjoys visual stimulation, this space can be fascinating. If they are sensitive to crowds, visit during quieter times such as early morning.

The London Theatre:

Large stage shows are performed here most evenings. These can include music, dance and production shows.

Shows are optional. If theatre environments are overwhelming, you can simply skip them.

Pool decks:

The ship has several pools including indoor and outdoor areas.

Outdoor pools can become busy on sea days. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter.

Waterpark:

MSC Bellissima has a kids water playground on the top deck of the ship. This is a great space for kids who love water play.

Hot tubs:

There are a number of hot tubs around the ship, both inside and outside. There are multiple larger hot tubs too – making them much more accessible.

Kids play room:

There are many play areas on MSC Bellissima – this is a room dedicated to parents and kids being able to stay and play together.

Step 4: Dining and Food Considerations

Food is one of the biggest advantages of cruising for families with autistic children.

You do not need to search for restaurants every day. Food options are already onboard and predictable.

MSC Bellissima offers:

  • Main dining rooms with scheduled dinner times
  • Buffet restaurants open for most of the day
  • Speciality restaurants
  • Room service

For families with restricted diets, buffets can be especially helpful because children can visually choose foods before committing.

Things to consider:

  • Visit the buffet during quieter times
  • Walk the buffet once before choosing food
  • Ask staff about allergens or ingredients
  • Stick with familiar foods where possible

There is also a delicious gelateria in the Galleria – I highly recommend trying it out (it is a paid service).

Cruise dining rooms also follow predictable routines, which many autistic children find reassuring.

Step 5: Activities and Entertainment

MSC Bellissima offers a wide range of activities, but you do not need to do everything.

Many families find that the most successful cruise days follow a simple structure:

  • Breakfast
  • One planned activity
  • Rest time
  • Dinner
  • Optional evening entertainment

Children’s clubs:

MSC operates kids clubs organised by age groups. Some children love these structured environments while others prefer to stay with family.

It is perfectly fine to use as much or as little of the ship’s entertainment as suits your child.

Family activities:

Activities on MSC Bellissima can include:

  • Swimming and hot tubs
  • Rooftop waterpark
  • Arcade games
  • Theatre shows
  • Deck games
  • Walking around the promenade
  • Watching the sea
  • Kids play room
  • LEGO events

Sometimes the simplest activities are the most regulating.

Step 6: Sea Days vs Port Days

Cruises alternate between sea days and port days.

Sea days:

The ship stays at sea and all activities happen onboard. These days can feel busier because everyone is on the ship.

Plan quieter moments such as early morning walks on deck or spending time on your balcony.

Port days:

The ship docks at a destination and many passengers go ashore. This often makes the ship quieter.

Some families choose to stay onboard and enjoy the ship with fewer crowds.

Both options are valid.

Step 7: Visual Planning and Familiarisation

Before your cruise, show your child what the ship looks like.

Search for:

  • ship walkthrough videos
  • cabin tours
  • deck tours
  • embarkation videos

Seeing the environment beforehand helps reduce uncertainty.

MSC Bellissima is visually distinctive with its long indoor promenade and glass lifts, which makes orientation easier once onboard.

Step 8: Visual Supports and PECS

If your child uses visual communication tools, prepare these before travel.

Visual supports help children understand transitions between cabin, dining areas, activities and shore excursions.
