If you’re travelling through Geneva Airport with a disability, reduced mobility, or additional needs, you’ll find it to be one of the more accessible and well-organised airports in Europe. Whether you need physical assistance, sensory support, or simply a smoother journey through security and boarding, here’s what to expect from the disabled facilities at Geneva Airport.

Autism Family Travel Guide Instagram

</details>

To start planning your trip to Switzerland, head to my guide to travelling Switzerland with autistic children to get started without the headache of searching for all of the information yourself.

Special Assistance at Geneva Airport

Geneva Airport offers dedicated assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM). New to the term PRM? I have a guide that explains what PRM is. This includes help from arrival at the airport, through check-in, security, passport control, and all the way to the aircraft door.

You can request assistance through your airline or travel provider at least 48 hours before your flight. On arrival, there are clearly marked assistance call points both outside the terminal and in key areas inside. You can also use the PRM Assist app to help you make special service requests for the airport.

Once checked in, trained staff will guide you through priority lanes where available, helping reduce waiting times and stress especially helpful if queues or crowds are difficult to manage.

To find the special assistance departments for all of the airports in Switzerland, head to my guide which lists out every airport in Switzerland and links to their PRM assistance information.

Step-Free Access

The airport is fully step-free, making it accessible for wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties. Lifts and ramps are available throughout the terminal, and signage is clear and easy to follow.

All key areas, including check-in desks, security, departure gates, and baggage reclaim are accessible without needing to use stairs.

Wheelchair Services

Wheelchair assistance is available from the moment you arrive. You can either bring your own mobility aid or use one provided by the airport. If you need to stay in your wheelchair during security this is possible and you can have a manual check done in a seperate area.

Staff are trained to assist with boarding and disembarking, including the use of ambulifts where needed for aircraft without direct boarding bridges.

Accessible Toilets & Changing Facilities

Accessible toilets are located throughout the airport, both landside and airside. These are spacious and designed for wheelchair users.

While facilities are generally good, it’s worth noting that Geneva Airport does not currently offer a full Changing Places facility, so if you require a height-adjustable bench or hoist, you may need to plan ahead.

Hidden Disabilities Support

Geneva Airport recognises that not all disabilities are visible. Passengers with autism, anxiety, or other non-visible conditions can request additional support to make their journey smoother.

While the Sunflower Lanyard scheme is not as widely promoted in Geneva Airport as in some UK airports, but Geneva Airport does recognise and support those using a Sunflower Lanyard and you can actually collect a free lanyard at Geneva Airport. You can collect a Sunflower Lanyard in the following locations:

GVAssistance reception – check-in level

Visitors Center – arrivals level

If your child (or you) struggles with noise, crowds, or waiting, it’s worth requesting assistance in advance so the airport can help minimise stress points.

Learn more about how Geneva Airport supports those with hidden disabilities on their invisible disabilities information page.

Security and Boarding

Passengers requiring assistance can usually access priority security lanes, reducing time spent in busy or overwhelming environments.

Boarding is typically handled with care, and pre-boarding is available so you can settle in before the main group boards. This can make a huge difference for neurodivergent travellers or those needing extra time.

Disabled Parking At Geneva Airport

Accessible parking spaces are available close to the terminal, with step-free routes into the airport.

Geneva Airport provides dedicated parking spaces for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) across several of its main car parks. If you need to park as close to the terminal as possible, P1 is likely to be the most convenient option, as it offers direct access to both Departures and Arrivals and has 42 accessible parking spaces.

Other options include P26, which has 20 accessible spaces and is around an 8–10 minute walk from the terminal, and P51, which has 12 accessible spaces and is also around an 8–10 minute walk away. The short-stay P2 car park has four accessible spaces and is approximately a three-minute walk from the terminal. Passengers using the airport’s French Sector can use P20, which has six accessible spaces and is around a five-minute walk from the terminal.

If you are travelling in an adapted vehicle, make sure you check the vehicle height restrictions before choosing a car park. Most have a maximum height of 2 metres, while P51 is limited to 1.90 metres. P26 can accommodate vehicles up to 2.40 metres in designated areas on Level -3, which may make it a more suitable option for some larger wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

You can use Geneva Airport’s car parks without making a reservation, subject to spaces being available when you arrive. However, the airport recommends booking ahead during busy periods where advance reservations are available. If walking or wheeling longer distances is difficult, I would consider P1 first because of its direct terminal access rather than choosing one of the more distant economy car parks.

You can check current parking information, availability and access details on the official Geneva Airport parking page before you travel.

Getting To and From Geneva Airport with a Disability

Geneva Airport is well connected to Geneva city centre and the surrounding region by train, bus and taxi. For disabled travellers, the best option will depend on your mobility needs, how much luggage or equipment you are carrying and whether you need guaranteed step-free assistance.

Travelling by Train

Geneva Airport has its own railway station, Genève-Aéroport, which is directly connected to the airport terminal. Trains provide a particularly quick connection between the airport and Geneva Cornavin, the city’s main railway station, with the journey taking around seven minutes. From the airport, you can also connect with destinations elsewhere in Switzerland.

If you use a wheelchair or require assistance getting on and off the train, it is worth checking the accessibility of your specific journey before travelling. Assistance for rail journeys in Switzerland is provided through the Swiss public transport system, and arrangements may vary depending on the station and train you are using.

If you are staying in eligible accommodation in Geneva, you may receive a Geneva Transport Card, which provides free travel within Zone 10 on buses, trains and other participating public transport. The card can also be used for the journey between Geneva Airport and Geneva Cornavin.

Travelling by Bus

Geneva’s TPG public transport network provides numerous bus connections to and from the airport. Twelve TPG lines currently serve Genève Aéroport directly, making buses useful if your accommodation is not close to a railway station.

Disabled passengers and wheelchair users should check the accessibility of the specific bus route and stop they plan to use, particularly if travelling with a large wheelchair, mobility scooter or disability pushchair. Although accessible vehicles operate within Geneva’s public transport network, accessibility can depend on the vehicle and infrastructure at individual stops.

For very early flights, the tpgAérobus also operates routes to Geneva Airport from several areas. The service is free for passengers travelling on a same-day flight, with your airline ticket or boarding pass acting as proof of eligibility.

Taking a Taxi

A taxi can be one of the simplest options for disabled travellers who find public transport difficult or who are travelling with wheelchairs, mobility equipment or a large amount of luggage.

Taxis are available at Geneva Airport, but if you require a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, I recommend arranging this in advance rather than relying on a suitable taxi being available when you arrive. When booking, explain the dimensions of your wheelchair or mobility device and whether you need to remain seated in your wheelchair during the journey.

If you are travelling with an autistic or otherwise disabled child, a pre-booked taxi can also reduce the number of transitions involved in getting from the airport to your accommodation.

Which Option Is Best?

For many disabled travellers heading into central Geneva, the train is likely to be the quickest option, particularly if your accommodation is close to Geneva Cornavin. Buses can be more convenient for destinations elsewhere in the city, while a pre-booked accessible taxi may be preferable if you have significant mobility needs, a large wheelchair or disability pushchair, or simply need a door-to-door journey.

You can find current public transport information on the Geneva Airport transport pages and check Geneva’s bus and public transport options through the TPG website.

Sensory Considerations

Geneva Airport is relatively calm compared to many major international hubs, but it can still get busy during peak travel times.

There are quieter seating areas available, though no dedicated sensory room. Bringing your own sensory supports like headphones, snacks, or comfort items can make a big difference.

Geneva Airport does a solid job of supporting passengers with a wide range of needs. It’s not perfect, particularly when it comes to more specialised facilities like Changing Places but the staff support, step-free design, and overall efficiency make it a manageable airport for families and travellers who need a bit more consideration.

If you take one thing away: book assistance early, be clear about your needs, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you arrive. It’s there. You just need to use it.

To learn more about visiting Geneva Airport with a disability they have a good information page for disabled passengers and how to prepare for your departure from Geneva Airport. If you are still left with questions after reading this post you can contact Geneva Airport directly for more answers.

Switzerland is known for smooth transport connections and well-organised airports, which can make travelling with a disability, reduced mobility or hidden disability much easier. Whether you need wheelchair assistance, help through security, support for an autistic traveller, or guidance for travelling with medical equipment, Swiss airports offer special assistance services that can be arranged before you fly. If you are new to special assistance, my guide to getting help at the airport explains what it is, who can use it and how to book it.

Most airports recommend requesting assistance through your airline at least 48 hours before travel so airport staff can prepare the right support for your arrival and departure.

This guide lists the main airports in Switzerland along with links to their special assistance, reduced mobility and disability support pages.

Quick Wins for Special Assistance at Swiss Airports

Request assistance through your airline when booking, or at least 48 hours before departure

Look for PRM (Passengers with Reduced Mobility) services when searching airport websites

Hidden disabilities including autism, dementia and non-visible conditions can also qualify for support

Assistance can include help with check-in, security, passport control and boarding

Many Swiss airports provide wheelchair services and accessible toilet facilities

If travelling with mobility equipment, notify your airline in advance with measurements and battery details if applicable

Major Airports in Switzerland and Their Assistance Links

Zurich Airport (ZRH)

Switzerland’s busiest airport offers extensive PRM services, accessible facilities, wheelchair support and dedicated meeting points for passengers requiring assistance.

Special Assistance Link: Zurich Airport Special Assistance

If you are planning to visit Zurich, my guide to visiting Zurich with autistic children is a good place to begin planning.

Geneva Airport (GVA)

Geneva Airport provides support for reduced mobility passengers, hidden disabilities and medical travel needs, with clear pre-booking guidance.

Special Assistance Link: Geneva Airport Reduced Mobility Assistance

Visiting Geneva? Let my guide to visiting Geneva with autistic children take the stress away from planning.

EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL)

Although shared by Switzerland, France and Germany, EuroAirport provides dedicated accessibility services and mobility support for all passengers.

Special Assistance Link: EuroAirport Assistance for Passengers with Reduced Mobility

My guide to visiting Basel with autistic children is a good place to start planning your trip to Basel, Switzerland.

Bern Airport (BRN)

Bern Airport offers accessibility support for passengers with reduced mobility and recommends arranging assistance through your airline in advance.

Special Assistance Link: Bern Airport Accessibility Services

Lugano Airport (LUG)

Lugano Airport supports passengers needing mobility help and recommends advance arrangements for wheelchair assistance and boarding support.

Special Assistance Link: Lugano Airport Passenger Assistance

The special assistance information for Lugano Airport is very sparse, unfortunately.

St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH)

This regional airport offers special assistance for reduced mobility passengers with pre-arranged support via the airline or airport team.

Special Assistance Link: People’s Airport St. Gallen Accessibility Services

Sion Airport (SIR)

Sion Airport offers support for passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility, particularly for regional and seasonal flights.

Special Assistance Link: Sion Airport Passenger Assistance

On the link above for Sion Airport, click on the section for passengers with reduced mobility to reveal the special assistance information for this airport.

What Special Assistance Can Include

Depending on the airport and your airline, support may include:

Help from arrival at the terminal to check-in

Wheelchair support through the airport

Priority security and boarding assistance

Help during passport control and customs

Assistance with baggage collection after landing

Support for autistic travellers and hidden disabilities

Help travelling with oxygen, medication or mobility aids

Some airports also offer quieter waiting spaces or allow pre-boarding for travellers who may benefit from additional time. My guide to getting help at the airport breaks down all of the kinds of help you can request at the airport. It is good to have some understanding of the disability codes airports and airlines use, especially the DPNA code if you are travelling with a hidden disability.

Hidden Disabilities and Autism Support At Swiss Airports

Not all disabilities are visible. Many Swiss airports support passengers with hidden disabilities including autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, sensory processing difficulties and dementia. I have a seperate guide for travelling with ADHD that includes practical tips and tricks to make travelling easier for ADHD brains.

If your child struggles with queues, crowds or unpredictable airport environments, special assistance can make a major difference. You can often request early boarding, quieter support and staff awareness without needing to explain everything repeatedly.

This is where adding the DPNA code to your booking can also help if your airline supports it.

It is also good to learn about the Sunflower Lanyard for travelling – it is widely recognised at airports around the world.

Flying through Switzerland can be much less stressful when the right support is arranged in advance. Whether you are travelling through Zurich, Geneva or a smaller regional airport, special assistance services are there to help make the journey smoother and safer.

Always contact your airline first, confirm your assistance request and keep any medical documentation easily accessible if needed.

A little planning before travel can make a huge difference on airport day.

One of the best surprises for visitors to Switzerland is discovering that many hotels give you a free public transport pass during your stay. This pass allows guests to travel on local buses, trams, trains or even boats without paying extra.

For families travelling in Switzerland — especially those trying to keep routines predictable for autistic children — this system can make getting around much simpler.

Below is a clear guide explaining how these hotel transport passes work, who gets them and how to use them.

What Is the Swiss Hotel Transport Pass?

In many Swiss cities and regions, hotels provide guests with a free local transport pass for the duration of their stay. The pass is funded through the local tourist tax (Kurtaxe or City Tax) that you pay when you stay overnight.

Instead of paying separately for buses or trams, the cost is effectively already included in your accommodation.

These passes usually allow unlimited travel within the local transport zone.

Examples include:

The Zürich Card (sometimes offered at hotels or purchased separately)

The Bern Ticket

The Lucerne Guest Card

The Montreux Riviera Card

The Interlaken Guest Card

Each region has its own version, but the idea is the same: hotel guests can use public transport for free or at a reduced price.

Read: Accessible transport in Switzerland – coming soon

How You Receive the Pass

Most hotels provide the transport pass when you check in. Increasingly, some destinations also send a digital pass before arrival once your booking is confirmed.

The pass may be:

A physical card

A printed paper ticket

A QR code or mobile pass

Always keep the pass with you when travelling, as transport inspectors do check tickets regularly.

If you lose it, the hotel reception can usually issue another one.

What Transport Is Included?

The exact coverage depends on the city or region, but typically the pass includes:

Local buses

Trams

Local trains within the transport zone

Sometimes lake boats or funiculars

For example:

In Bern, the Bern Ticket includes buses, trams and lifts within the city zone.

In Lucerne, the Lucerne Guest Card gives free bus travel in the city and discounts on attractions.

In Montreux, the Riviera Card includes buses, trains and discounts on museums.

Long-distance trains between cities (for example Zurich to Interlaken) are not included, but you may receive discounts on some regional routes.

How Long the Pass Is Valid

Most hotel transport passes are valid for:

The entire duration of your stay

From the day of arrival until the day of departure

Some passes are valid immediately on arrival, even before hotel check-in, if your hotel sends the digital pass in advance.

Always check the start time printed on the pass.

Why Switzerland Offers This

Switzerland has one of the most efficient public transport systems in the world. Cities encourage visitors to use it because it:

Reduces traffic in historic town centres

Makes travel easier for tourists

Helps distribute visitors across regions

Promotes environmentally friendly travel

Because public transport is already extremely reliable and frequent, it is often the easiest way to explore Swiss cities.

Why This Is Helpful for Families

For families travelling with autistic children, the hotel transport pass can make a big difference.

Instead of worrying about buying tickets each time, you can simply board the next tram or bus when plans change.

This flexibility is helpful if:

Your child needs a break and you want to return to the hotel quickly

You want to avoid long walks

You need predictable transport routines

Swiss transport is also generally quiet, clean and well signposted, which can reduce travel stress.

Tips for Using Your Pass

A few practical tips can make using the transport pass easier:

Download the SBB Mobile app, which shows real-time timetables for trains, trams and buses across Switzerland.

Carry the pass every time you travel, even for short journeys.

Check the zone map to understand where the pass is valid. Most hotel passes cover only the local area.

If travelling outside the included zones, you usually only need to buy a supplement ticket for the extra distance.

Is It Always Free?

In most destinations the transport pass is effectively free because the cost is included in the tourist tax you already pay with your hotel stay.

Tourist tax in Switzerland usually ranges from around CHF 2 to CHF 7 per person per night, depending on the city.

Children are often exempt or pay a reduced amount.

Switzerland can be an expensive country to visit, so small benefits like these really help. Free local transport makes it easy to explore historic centres, lakesides and mountain viewpoints without worrying about extra ticket costs.

If you are booking a hotel in Switzerland, it is always worth checking whether they provide a guest transport card — it can save money and make getting around far simpler during your trip.

Basel is a compact, colourful city in north-western Switzerland, sitting right on the borders of France and Germany. It blends medieval Old Town charm with world-class museums, river swimming culture and an easy-to-navigate transport system. For families travelling with autistic children, Basel can feel refreshingly manageable. Distances are short, public transport is reliable and there are plenty of open spaces to regulate between activities. Here is my guide to visiting Basel – hopefully it makes planning your own trip here easier.

Getting To Basel

Basel is served by EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg (BSL), which is uniquely positioned on the border of Switzerland and France. From the airport, there are several straightforward ways to reach the city centre.

Bus 50 (Basel side): This is the most convenient and most commonly used option. Bus 50 runs directly from the Swiss side of the airport to Basel SBB main railway station in around 15–20 minutes. Services are frequent throughout the day and it is simple to use, even with luggage.

Bus 11 (French side): If you exit via the French sector, Bus 11 connects the airport to Saint-Louis railway station in France. From there, you can take a short train journey into Basel.

Taxi: Taxis are available outside both the Swiss and French exits. A taxi to central Basel usually takes around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic and can be useful after a long travel day.

Car hire: Several major car rental companies operate from the airport. If you are planning to explore further afield, including Germany’s Black Forest or the Alsace region in France, hiring a car can be practical.

Train connections: There is no train station directly at the airport, but Bus 50 to Basel SBB connects you straight into Switzerland’s excellent rail network, making onward travel very straightforward.

Private transfer: Pre-booked private transfers are available and can be particularly helpful if travelling with children, multiple suitcases or additional mobility needs.

Where To Stay in Basel

Basel offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxury riverside hotels to practical budget options close to transport links.

For a straightforward and affordable base, easyHotel Basel by easyJet is a popular option and it is the hotel we chose for our stay in Basel. It is centrally located and within walking distance of the Old Town, restaurants and public transport. Rooms are compact, simple and functional. It works well for families who plan to be out exploring most of the day and simply need a clean, predictable place to sleep. As with other easyHotel properties, extras such as housekeeping and luggage storage may incur additional charges, so it is worth checking this in advance. The no-frills layout can also suit autistic children who prefer uncluttered, predictable spaces.

Many hotels in Basel provide guests with a BaselCard, which offers free public transport within the city and discounts on attractions. This can make staying slightly outside the very centre more cost-effective while still being well connected.

If you prefer a quieter setting, consider areas near the River Rhine or residential neighbourhoods such as Gundeldingen. For those wanting to be in the heart of the action, the Old Town offers boutique hotels within walking distance of museums and historic landmarks.

Family-Friendly Activities in Basel

For your tours and attractions, don’t forget to use the code AUTISMFAMILYTRAVELGUIDE5 for a discount with GetYourGuide. Find out more about GetYourGuide and links for the app here.

Basel Zoo

Basel Zoo is one of the oldest and most respected zoos in Europe. It is well laid out, with wide pathways and clear signage, making it manageable with children. Animals include elephants, lions, penguins and a large aquarium section. Visiting earlier in the day can help avoid peak crowds, which is particularly helpful for sensory-sensitive children.

Tierpark Lange Erlen

Tierpark Lange Erlen is a peaceful, free animal park set within a large green recreational area on the edge of Basel, close to the German border. Unlike a traditional zoo, it focuses mainly on native and European wildlife such as deer, lynx, wild boar and various bird species, all housed in spacious outdoor enclosures surrounded by woodland.

The atmosphere is calm and natural, with wide walking paths, picnic spots and plenty of open space for children to move around. It feels more like a nature reserve than a formal attraction, making it a lovely option for families who want fresh air, gentle wildlife encounters and a quieter, less overwhelming experience.

Basel Old Town

Basel’s Old Town is compact, colourful and easy to explore on foot. Expect cobbled streets, medieval buildings and impressive architecture such as Basel Minster. There are small squares where children can pause and reset, and plenty of cafés for breaks. The pedestrian-friendly layout reduces traffic noise and stress.

One of our favourite things we happened upon while wandering the Old Town in Basel was a street performer making huge bubbles and kids were chasing them all over the open square we were in. It was such a fun thing to watch and our son absolutely loved it. You can even opt to do a Basel Old Town walking tour.

Rhine River Ferry

One of the simplest but most memorable experiences in Basel is crossing the River Rhine on one of the small cable ferries. These traditional wooden boats are pulled across the river by the current and offer a short, calm journey with beautiful views. It is inexpensive and feels adventurous without being overwhelming.

Tinguely Museum

The Tinguely Museum showcases playful mechanical sculptures created by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. The moving, clanking artworks can be fascinating for children, particularly those who enjoy machines and cause-and-effect displays. Some pieces are noisy, so ear defenders may be helpful if your child is sensitive to sound.

Swiss Museum of Paper

This hands-on museum allows children to make their own paper and learn about printing and bookbinding. Interactive workshops are engaging and structured, which can suit children who thrive on clear instructions and focused tasks.

Fondation Beyeler

Located just outside the city centre, Fondation Beyeler houses modern and contemporary art in a light-filled building surrounded by greenery. The calm setting and spacious galleries can feel less intense than larger museums. The surrounding park is ideal for decompressing after indoor exploration.

Basel Toy Museum

The Basel Toy Museum features an extensive collection of dolls, teddy bears and miniature scenes. It is relatively compact and easy to navigate, making it suitable for shorter visits. For children who enjoy detailed displays and imaginative play, it can be a charming stop.

Dreiländereck

Just outside Basel lies the unique Dreiländereck, the point where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. Marked by a modern monument on the banks of the River Rhine, this tri-border area is a surprisingly calm and open space with wide riverside paths and views across all three countries at once.

You can quite literally stand in one country and look across the water into another within seconds. It is easy to reach by tram, bus or boat from central Basel, and the flat waterfront makes it ideal for a relaxed stroll with children. For families, it offers a simple but memorable experience: three cultures, three languages and three nations meeting in one peaceful, accessible spot.

Watching boats pass by, sitting on the steps, or simply walking alongside the water can provide a calming rhythm. In warmer months, locals float down the river in waterproof swim bags, which is fascinating to watch. The open space, fresh air and predictable movement of the water can help children regulate after busier city activities.

Getting Around Basel With Autistic Children

Basel has an excellent public transport system made up of trams and buses that run frequently and reliably. The network is easy to understand, with clear maps and announcements. Trams are generally clean and spacious, although they can become busy during rush hour.

If your accommodation provides a BaselCard, public transport within the city is free, which removes the stress of buying individual tickets. For children who prefer routine, planning routes in advance and showing them images of the trams beforehand can help reduce anxiety.

Walking is also very realistic in central Basel. Distances between major sights are short, and pedestrian zones in the Old Town reduce traffic noise and unpredictability. We walked to most places in Basel, only using the train once when we went to visit the area where Switzerland, Germany and France meet.

You can also opt for doing a sightseeing bus tour in Basel with audio guide and free wifi. If you go to Basel in winter definitely plan to use some sort of transport as it gets extremely cold.

Is Basel Autism-Friendly?

Basel may not actively market itself as an autism-friendly destination, but several features make it a strong choice for families with additional needs.

Things That Make Basel Stand Out

The city is compact and well organised, reducing travel time between attractions. Public transport is efficient and predictable. Streets are clean and generally safe, which can lower overall parental stress.

Green spaces are plentiful, offering easy opportunities for regulation breaks. Museums are varied and often spacious, allowing you to leave and re-enter without difficulty. The cultural atmosphere in Switzerland tends to be orderly and respectful, which can contribute to a calmer experience overall.

Basel combines culture, nature and structure in a way that feels manageable rather than chaotic. With thoughtful planning and built-in downtime, it can be an excellent European city break for families travelling with autistic children.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in. Head to our Switzerland travel page for all of our Switzerland guides and autism-friendly recommendations.

Sensory Tools: Bring along sensory tools and comfort items that help manage sensory needs, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory toys, and a sensory toolkit.

Clear Communication: Ensure that everyone involved in the trip understands the needs and preferences of the neurodiverse individual. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the travel experience. Consider using PECS or an AAC. We also have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. You may find our bumper pack of travel PECS helpful.

Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you.
Traveling to Zurich with an autistic child felt daunting at first – a new city, different language, and lots of sensory unknowns. But our long weekend (Friday to Monday) in Switzerland’s largest city turned out to be an eye-opening mix of challenges and delights. In this post, I share our family’s personal experience in Zurich: the general vibe for neurodivergent families, sensory impressions (the sounds, sights, and crowds), what we found hard versus easy, and all the autism-aware tips we picked up along the way.

Zurich is the third city we have visited in Switzerland: we have also been to Basel and Geneva.

How to Get to Zurich

Getting to Zurich was the first step of our adventure. We opted to fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH), as it’s the largest international airport in Switzerland and only a 10-minute train ride from the city centre. If you’re coming from elsewhere in Europe, you could also arrive by train – Zurich is well-connected by high-speed rails (we saw direct trains from cities like Paris and Munich). For us, flying was the easiest, and we made sure to prepare some autism-friendly strategies for the journey.

One big plus – you don’t need to take a taxi if you don’t want to. The train from Zurich Airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB) main station runs every few minutes, and the ride is only about 10 minutes. We loved that we could go straight from baggage claim onto a train; it was quick and less stimulating than a half-hour car ride might have been. There are multiple trains that run from the airport into Zurich. Depending on where you play to stay, you can pick the one that works the best for you. We were staying at an AirBnb on Neugasse so we had plenty of options on which train to get as the AirBnb was bang in the middle of 2 major stations. The trains are modern and were not crowded when we boarded late afternoon. If your child loves trains like mine does, this is a bonus adventure, and many of the trains are double or even triple-deckers.

However, if you arrive at peak rush hour or your child is already overwhelmed from the flight, a taxi or pre-booked car might be worth it despite Zurich’s high prices. Taxis will run about 15–20 minutes to downtown. In our case, the short train ride went smoothly, and having that predictable, on-time arrival set a positive tone – our kids relaxed seeing that the journey “plan” was being followed precisely (thank you, Swiss punctuality!).

Where to Stay in Zurich

Choosing the right accommodation can make or break a family trip, especially when autism is in the mix. We decided to stay in a centrally located AirBnb with apartment-style amenities for comfort and convenience. In Zurich, you’ll find many options – from traditional hotels to serviced apartments and Airbnbs. Here are a few considerations we found important:

Quiet and Low Sensory Environment: We looked for a hotel on a calm street to ensure quiet at night. Zurich’s city centre isn’t raucous, but being away from busy roads or tram lines meant fewer honking or clattering noises seeping in. We decided to stay near the main train station so we could easily get to the apartment after our flight landed.

Proximity to Transit and Attractions: We chose to stay near the main station (Zurich HB) in District 1, which turned out great for minimizing transitions. Being 10 minutes from multiple tram lines and trains meant we could quickly get back for a break if needed. Additionally, a central location let us walk to many sights (like the WOW Museum) and restaurants, avoiding the complications of too many transfers.

Family Amenities (Wi-Fi, Kitchenette, Space): Reliable Wi-Fi was a must-have for us, since our sons winds down by watching their favourite videos. Thankfully, the internet in Zurich is generally fast – our apartment’s Wi-Fi never gave us trouble streaming YouTube on multiple devices. We also valued having a fridge and kettle in the apartment. This allowed us to store familiar snacks and make or warm up simple foods. Another thing we appreciated was having a little extra space – we actually opted for an apartment with 3 bedrooms and a living room which also had a sofa bed. After a day of stimulation, our autistic children sometimes need a separate nook to chill.

In summary, pick a location and setup that reduce unpredictability. For us, that meant central, quiet, and with some homey touches. Zurich has a reputation for expensive hotels, but we found that by opting for an AirBnb instead, we got what we needed without breaking the bank.

Some family-favourite hotels in the area include Hotel Kronenhof in nearby Schaffhausen (if focusing on Rhine Falls) and Vienna House zur Bleiche Schaffhausen, which offer family rooms and are also well-reviewed by other parents. In the city itself, apart-hotels like EMA House or Adagio Zurich City Center offer kitchenettes but we had trouble finding one to actually accommodate a family of five. Whatever you choose, make sure it aligns with your child’s needs – a good night’s rest and a safe-feeling space to return to will set you up for success each day.

Where we stayed in Zurich with autistic children

We chose to stay at an AirBnb near the main station in Zurich. This was for two main reasons: to save money because this was going to cost a third of what a hotel would, and to be located somewhere slightly outside of the main city centre so we could assure the kids could get a break from the crowds and chaos.

We stayed in an area called Neugasse and the building was 83. You’ll recognise it on AirBnb because it is bright yellow! You can always check out the AirBnb listing for the apartment we stayed in. As I mentioned, there are 3 bedrooms and a living room with a sofa bed. Each bedroom can sleep 2 people. There is one main bedroom with a double bed and then 2 smaller rooms with a main single bed which also has a roll-out single bed underneath it.

The apartment was very new to being an AirBnb, so we did have a little trouble getting in on the first day because the key lock box code we had was incorrect and then when we got it the key wasn’t inside. Eventually we figured out that it was in the mailbox at the front of the building and we managed to get in. The company had given us the information to access a studio they had in the building until they could get a key to us, but we found this key right when they sent that information over.

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Zurich

Zurich may be known as a banking city, but for our family it was a playground of sensory experiences and outdoor activities. We planned a mix of indoor and outdoor attractions to keep things balanced. Here are the top family-friendly things we found to do in and around Zurich:

WOW Museum – Room for Illusions

This was our first big thing we did on Saturday and a highlight of our trip. The WOW Museum is an interactive museum of optical illusions right in downtown Zurich (just off Bahnhofstrasse). It is essentially a collection of mind-bending rooms and visual tricks that invite you to play and explore. Our experience here was fantastic. We moved through rooms with different illusions: a mirror maze, an upside-down room (yes, the furniture is on the ceiling!), a colour shadow wall, and more. Each space invited us to touch things, pose for silly photos, and basically say “wow” – which we did, a lot!

Rhine Falls Day Trip

On Sunday, we ventured a bit outside Zurich to see the Rhine Falls. This was a truly awesome experience for our nature-loving kids and a memorable sensory experience for our autistic son. The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German) are the largest waterfalls in Europe, located about 50 km north of Zurich near the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall. Getting there was very easy, we had booked a private tour around many spots outside of Zurich and this happened to be the first stop. It is possible to book a tour to the falls only, it usually is a half day tour and lasts from 3.5 hours to 5.5 hours. You can also do the trip by train from Zurich or take a group tour on the bus.

Lindt Home of Chocolate (Chocolate Museum)

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is located in Kilchberg, just outside Zurich (about a 15-minute train ride from Zurich HB, plus a short bus). It is the home of the world’s largest chocolate fountain in person – it’s a 9-meter-tall fountain of real flowing chocolate right in the lobby. Talk about a Willy Wonka moment!
Zurich Old Town

The Old Town of Zurich, with its cobbled streets and spotting fountains, was a nice low-key activity we did on our first full afternoon in Zurich. There is so much to soak in here, the Limmat River, the lake, the amazing architecture and all of the cafes and shops too.

Getting Around Zurich with Autistic Children

A special mention for train travel outside Zurich: Switzerland’s SBB railway has joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, so staff are becoming aware of hidden disabilities like autism.

Getting around Zurich by tram is convenient and efficient. Trams, buses, and trains are all part of the city’s excellent public transport network, which is very accessible for families. One of the best parts of Zurich for us was its public transportation system. We didn’t rent a car at all – and honestly didn’t miss it for a second. The city’s trams, buses, and local trains (S-Bahn) are clean, frequent, and punctually on schedule. This predictability was a huge plus for our autistic child. He loves knowing exactly when something will happen.

Tickets and Passes: Zurich’s transit system is integrated, which means one ticket covers tram, bus, local train, even boats within the city zones. We purchased a ticket like this when we left the airport and used it to get the train to the city. For the kids, it was very budget-friendly: children under 6 travel free on all public transport, and older kids (6–15) get a discounted rate compared to an adult ticket. Accessibility on transit was mostly great. Trams are low-floor and level with the platform in the city centre, so getting a stroller on was easy (worth mentioning if you have younger kids or a child who might bolt and you use a stroller for safety). Buses kneel to the curb, and there are priority seats which people will generally offer if they see you with children.

Overall, getting around Zurich without a car was not only doable, it was enjoyable. Zurich’s size is manageable – many times we just walked instead of taking and public transport because it was quicker and easier to walk than to have to worry about taking a double pushchair on a train or tram. The combination of walkable streets and excellent transit earned Zurich an A+ in our book for accessibility and ease of movement with an autistic child. If you plan to spend a while in Switzerland, or travel between cities, I would recommend looking into a Swiss Travel Pass.

Eating in Zurich with autistic children

Eating while traveling can be one of the most challenging aspects for families with autistic kids, especially if your child has limited food interests or sensory sensitivities to tastes and textures. Zurich did pose some challenges in this department (mainly because Swiss restaurant prices can induce grown-up meltdowns, let alone child ones!), but we managed by combining dining out with self-catering and a bit of creativity. There are major food chains like McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King and they are easy to find in the city centre of Zurich, but you can also use Uber Eats to order them for delivery to your hotel or apartment. We did a mix of both of these, but even fast food is expensive in Switzerland and one McDonald’s order for the five of us cost me just under £70!

Is Zurich autism-friendly?

Reflecting on our four days in Zurich, we found the city to be welcoming and manageable for our neurodivergent child. It’s not a designated “autism-certified” destination per se, but in many ways Zurich’s inherent qualities align well with what an autism family might need.

Things that make Zurich stand out

Zurich runs like a Swiss watch – and that is more than just a saying. Schedules are kept, things happen on time, and information is clearly communicated (often in multiple languages). For our routine-loving child, this structure was a blessing. Transitions were smoother because if we said “the tram will be here in 3 minutes,” it really was. That minimized uncertainty, which usually minimizes anxiety for him.

Zurich is a city, so there’s going to be noise, crowds, and visual stimulation, but compared to other major cities (say London or New York), it felt more subdued. The streets were generally clean and not overly chaotic. We even found the main train station to be fairly calm with people spread across all of the open space instead of crowding around one another. There are a lot of nice and quiet spots in Zurich, like the parks or squares, where you can pause for a moment.

There were a few surprising perks for our family. One was how accessible everything is – not just physically, but also in terms of inclusivity. There are so many open spaces, people aren’t squashed into small lanes or pavements so the crowds are not as overwhelming as you may experience in other major cities. Public transport recognizing the sunflower lanyard is another big plus; even if you never explicitly use the assistance, just having staff aware is comforting. We also discovered that many museums in Switzerland offer free entry for caregivers of people with disabilities – we didn’t utilize this, but it’s good to know for tighter budgets.

Zurich is very safe, and having that peace of mind allowed us to focus more on our child than on our surroundings. For instance, we didn’t worry about pickpockets or traffic in the same way as in some cities. Crosswalks are respected (cars actually stop for pedestrians!). When our son impulsively started to run toward a fountain, we could catch up without also fearing a car coming out of nowhere. Little things like that reduce parental stress, which indirectly benefits the child too. Cleanliness might not seem like an autism-specific issue, but for us it is; our son will comment (loudly) if something smells bad or is dirty. We also often have to stop our daughter from picking up trash as she is super curious, but thankfully this was not really a concern in Zurich besides from at Amsthaus III where we found empty bottles, trash and broken glass.

One thing that we found to be more of a barrier was the cost of things – especially food. We couldn’t justify buying things in the hopes that it was edible for the kids because it cost so much. We played it safe more often than not and that meant eating in the same places we know or ordering the same foods we know they like (such as fries).

On the whole, Zurich felt like a city that, while not explicitly catering to autism, has many of the ingredients that make traveling with autism easier: organized infrastructure, a culture that isn’t overly confrontational, lots of nature intermixed with city, and services that are high-quality and reliable. Our kids had a great time – better than we anticipated – and I think that’s because Zurich quietly supported their needs at every turn, from the moment we landed to the day we flew home.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in.

We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. Consider using our Switzerland PECS to help manage your trip to Zurich.

Safety: Consider getting an autism card for your child, or even better – use our emergency passport for medical information and important contacts. Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you. TinyTags also feature a location alert to help you find your child.

Would we recommend it? Absolutely. Zurich offers a balanced blend of adventure and ease. It’s great for families who appreciate structure (if your child loves routines, this city’s clockwork precision will be your friend) and who want a mix of urban activities and nature escapes. If your kid is into trains, boats, or water, Zurich will be an instant hit.

To any other parents of autistic children reading this and contemplating a trip to Zurich (or anywhere): you can absolutely do it. It will require planning and flexibility, and there might be tough moments, but the joy and growth you’ll witness in your child (and in yourself) are so worth it.

Getting To Geneva

Geneva is well-served by a big international airport. This is exactly how we got to Geneva on our day trip there. There are a few transport options from Geneva airport into Geneva city centre.

Traveling from Geneva Airport (GVA) to the city centre is convenient and straightforward, with several transport options available to suit different needs:

Train: One of the quickest and most convenient ways to get from Geneva Airport to the city centre is by train. The airport has its own train station, located just a short walk from the terminal. Trains run frequently, about every 10 to 15 minutes, and the journey to Geneva’s main train station, Gare Cornavin, takes only 7 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at machines in the airport or online. This is what we did and it was so easy (once we got help with booking our tickets from the guy in the station)!

Bus: Geneva’s public bus system, operated by Transports Publics Genevois (TPG), offers several bus routes that connect the airport to various parts of the city. The most direct option is bus number 5, which runs from the airport to Gare Cornavin, taking about 20 minutes. Buses are frequent and provide an affordable way to reach the city. Tickets can be bought at machines at the airport or through the TPG app.

Taxi: Taxis are readily available at Geneva Airport and provide a comfortable, door-to-door service to your destination in the city. The journey by taxi takes around 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are metered, and while they are more expensive than public transport, they are convenient, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are traveling with children.

Private Transfer: For a more personalized experience, you can book a private transfer in advance. This service includes a driver waiting for you at the arrivals area and a direct ride to your accommodation in Geneva. Private transfers offer comfort and convenience, especially for families or groups with specific needs. You can book a private transfer here.

Car Rental: If you prefer to drive yourself, car rental services are available at Geneva Airport. Several major car rental companies have desks in the airport, and renting a car offers the flexibility to explore Geneva and its surroundings at your own pace. Driving into the city takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Shuttle Services: Some hotels in Geneva offer shuttle services to and from the airport. It’s a good idea to check with your accommodation in advance to see if they provide this service, as it can be a convenient and cost-effective way to reach your hotel.

These transport options make it easy to get from Geneva Airport to the city centre, allowing you to choose the best method based on your preferences and travel needs.

Where To Stay in Geneva

We did not stay over in Geneva, so I have no personal recommendations for the city.

Family-Friendly Activities in Geneva

Lake Geneva Cruise

A boat cruise on Lake Geneva is a relaxing way to see the city and its stunning surroundings from the water. The gentle motion of the boat can be calming for children, and the fresh air and scenic views make it an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Cruises often include audio guides, helping to keep kids engaged. Book your Lac Leman cruise in advance here.

The Natural History Museum of Geneva

The Natural History Museum offers interactive exhibits that appeal to children of all ages. Kids can explore displays featuring dinosaurs, animals, and minerals. The museum’s calm and spacious environment makes it a sensory-friendly place to visit. Entrance is free, making it an accessible option for families.

Jardin Anglais (English Garden)

Jardin Anglais is a beautiful park located along the shores of Lake Geneva. The park’s wide-open spaces, flowerbeds, and famous Flower Clock provide a serene environment for children to run and play. The gentle sounds of the lake and the sight of the Jet d’Eau fountain create a sensory-friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed a nice little break in the park before heading to Jet d’Eau and having lunch by the lake. You can book to do a tour with a local to go to all of the best photo spots, like the Jardin Anglais!

Geneva Water Taxi (Mouettes Genevoises)

The Geneva Water Taxis, known as “Mouettes Genevoises,” are small boats that operate as part of the city’s public transportation system. Taking a short ride across the lake is an exciting yet soothing experience for children, offering unique views of the city from the water. It’s a fun and budget-friendly way to get around.

Geneva Old Town Walking Tour

Exploring Geneva’s Old Town with a guided walking tour is a great way to discover the city’s history in a family-friendly format. The cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and hidden courtyards provide an engaging environment. Tours often include stops at quieter, less crowded spots, which can be more comfortable for sensory-sensitive children. This activity can be booked through GetYourGuide and you can book the walking tour of Geneva online here. There is also a family walking tour which might be more understanding of children with autism.

The Conservatory and Botanical Garden

The Conservatory and Botanical Garden of Geneva is a tranquil haven filled with diverse plant species. The garden features sensory-friendly environments with various textures, scents, and colours for children to explore. It’s a peaceful place to walk, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy nature. Guided tours are available, making it both educational and enjoyable.

The Patek Philippe Museum

While primarily a museum showcasing watchmaking, the Patek Philippe Museum offers an educational experience with its collection of antique watches and historical artifacts. The quiet atmosphere and focus on intricate, detailed objects can be particularly engaging for children who are fascinated by mechanical things.

Parc La Grange

Parc La Grange is one of Geneva’s largest parks, offering plenty of space for families to enjoy outdoor activities. The park features playgrounds, open lawns, and a beautiful rose garden. The sensory-friendly environment, with the gentle rustling of trees and the scent of flowers, provides a relaxing retreat for both children and adults.

Broken Chair and United Nations Tour

For an educational outing, visit the Broken Chair sculpture and take a guided tour of the United Nations Office at Geneva. The tours, bookable via GetYourGuide, provide insight into international diplomacy and human rights, presented in an accessible way. The area around the UN is spacious and calm, offering a quieter experience in the heart of the city.

Our Favourite Sensory-Friendly Experience in Geneva

Baby Plage

This was probably our favourite thing to do in Geneva – it was a really relaxing spot in the middle of an otherwise busy city. Baby Plage is a small beach on Lac Leman but it also has a play park made of old rubber and tyre for the kids to climb, swing and jump on. There is a grassy area behind the sand which was a nice spot for baby Sylvie to relax.

Geneva is generally considered an autism-friendly destination, thanks to its commitment to accessibility, inclusive services, and a calm, welcoming atmosphere. While it may not have as many explicitly autism-specific services as some larger cities, Geneva offers several features that make it a good choice for families with autistic children.

Things That Make Geneva Stand Out

Several of Geneva’s museums and cultural institutions offer interactive exhibits that engage children in a sensory-friendly way. The Natural History Museum, for example, is spacious and features displays that are both visually appealing and easy to navigate. Additionally, many museums offer quiet areas where visitors can take breaks if needed.

Geneva is home to world-class healthcare facilities, which can be reassuring for families traveling with autistic children.

Geneva is known for its well-organized public transportation system, which is largely accessible. Trains, trams, and buses are equipped with ramps and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, making it easier for families with mobility needs to get around.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in.

We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. Consider using our Switzerland PECS to add to your experience.

Imagine waking up in Edinburgh, getting dressed at home, and then spending the day exploring the stunning city of Geneva, Switzerland, before returning home to your own bed that same night. This is termed as an extreme day trip to Geneva. It’s entirely possible with careful planning and efficient use of time. Here’s how to make the most of a one-day adventure in Geneva. For more detailed destination planning, read my guide to Geneva with autistic children.

Getting There and Back

Morning Flight to Geneva:
Direct flights from Edinburgh to Geneva are available with airlines such as easyJet and British Airways. Travellers who need airport support can check my guide to special assistance at Switzerland’s airports before flying. The journey takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, making it feasible to catch an early morning flight and arrive in Geneva around 9 AM. We flew with easyJet and our flight was at 6.25am.

Evening Flight Back to Edinburgh:
To maximize your day, choose an evening flight back, typically around 8 PM, giving you about 9 hours to explore the city. We went for a 6pm (roughly) flight home. It was delayed for a couple of hours and we ended up not taking off until after 8pm. We were home and in bed in the Scottish Borders by 11pm. If you need assistance at either end of the journey, my directory of airport assistance and disabled-facilities guides can help with your planning.

Transport Options from Geneva Airport

Upon arrival at Geneva Airport, you have several transport options to get into the city or venture further afield. Disabled and autistic travellers can also read my guide to Geneva Airport with a disability before travelling. There is a station attached to the airport, if you walk over into it there is usually someone by the ticket machines to help you pick the best ticket for your needs.

1. Train:

Cost: Around CHF 3 for a single ticket.

Time: Approximately 7 minutes to Geneva’s central station (Cornavin).

Details: Trains run frequently, every 10-20 minutes. It’s the quickest and most efficient way to reach the city centre.

2. Bus:

Cost: Free public transport ticket available at the airport for up to 80 minutes.

Time: About 20 minutes to the city centre.

Details: Bus lines 5 and 10 connect the airport with various parts of the city.

3. Taxi:

Cost: Approximately CHF 35-45.

Time: Around 15-20 minutes to the city centre, depending on traffic.

Details: Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal.

4. Car Rental:

Cost: Varies by company and car type; around CHF 60-100 per day.

Details: Ideal if you plan to explore areas outside Geneva. Several car rental agencies are located at the airport.

Best Option: The 9-5 Transport Pass

For a day trip, the “9-5 Ticket” is an excellent option. For longer stays, read my guide to Switzerland’s free public transport pass to check whether your accommodation includes local transport. This day pass allows unlimited travel on Geneva’s public transport network, including buses, trams, and boats, between 9 AM and 5 PM. This is what we went for.

Cost: CHF 8 per adult. CHF 6.50 per child over 5.

Benefits: Unlimited travel within the city and surrounding areas, perfect for a full day of sightseeing without worrying about individual ticket purchases. Children under 5 are free.

Alternatively, you can go for a fuller Geneva pass that allows entry to certain museums and exhibits and even takes you over into France to ride a cable car into the snowy mountains.

What to Do in Geneva in a Day

With limited time, planning your itinerary efficiently is crucial. Here are some top attractions and activities that can be comfortably done in a day.

Watch our entire day in Geneva from start to finish here.

Flower Clock (L’Horloge Fleurie):

Location: Jardin Anglais (English Garden).

Details: A symbol of Geneva’s watchmaking industry, this beautiful clock is made entirely of flowers and changes with the seasons.

You can walk out on a walkway to the Jet D’Eau and we did it until we started to get sprayed with water and then turned back toward the main promenade and visited a tiny beach.

If you want to eat somewhere by the lake, I recommend this place. We found the price so reasonable and my two autistic boys still say it is the best pizza they ever had.

Location: South of the Jet d’Eau.

Details: A small, family-friendly beach perfect for a quick dip or relaxing by the lake.
An extreme day trip to Geneva with kids from Edinburgh is not only feasible but also incredibly rewarding. Geneva is considered one of the most expensive cities to visit in Europe, and we managed to spend less than £72 per person to visit for the day (and this included parking in Edinburgh Airport and also extra food due to the flight delay). I did this video as a cost breakdown for Geneva as a day trip. We managed to keep costs low by bringing a travel backpack each and also a snack bag that kept the kids in snacks all day without having to stop other than for planned meals.

With efficient transportation options and a well-planned itinerary, you can experience the highlights of this beautiful Swiss city in just one day. Make the most of your visit by utilizing the 9-5 Ticket for unlimited travel, ensuring you see all the top sights without the hassle of purchasing multiple tickets. Whether it’s enjoying the serene beauty of Lake Geneva, exploring the historic Old Town, or taking in the vibrant culture and scenery, Geneva offers a perfect blend of experiences for a memorable day trip.
