Getting to Rio de Janeiro

The main gateway to Rio de Janeiro is Galeão International Airport (GIG), which is well-connected with direct flights from major cities around the world. From the airport, various transportation options, such as taxis, airport shuttles, and private transfers, can take you to your accommodation in the city.

Here are the transport options from Galeão International Airport (GIG) to Rio de Janeiro:

  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available at GIG airport. Official taxi stands are located outside each terminal, and passengers can choose between regular taxis and special airport taxis. It’s a convenient and direct option, especially for those with luggage or traveling with children.
  • Ride-Sharing Services: Services like Uber and 99 are available at GIG airport. You can book a ride through their respective apps, and the pick-up points are clearly marked at the airport. Ride-sharing is often a more affordable and flexible option than traditional taxis.
  • Airport Shuttle Services: There are several shuttle services operating between GIG airport and various points in Rio de Janeiro. These shuttles are a cost-effective option and often provide door-to-door service. You can pre-book these shuttles online or find them at designated areas in the airport.
  • Public Bus: Public buses run between GIG airport and various parts of Rio de Janeiro. The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, specifically the TransCarioca line, connects the airport to the city’s metro system at Vicente de Carvalho station, providing access to many city destinations. This option is very economical but may be less convenient with a lot of luggage or with young children.
  • Metro:While there is no direct metro line from GIG airport, you can use the BRT to connect to the Rio metro system. From Vicente de Carvalho station, you can take the metro to various destinations within the city. This option combines bus and metro travel and is an affordable way to reach central Rio.
  • Private Transfers: Several companies offer private transfer services from GIG airport to hotels and other locations in Rio. This service can be pre-booked and provides a comfortable and personalized travel experience, especially suitable for families or groups with specific needs. You can book a private transfer with GetYourGuide here.
  • Car Rentals: Car rental services are available at GIG airport, with several international and local companies operating at the terminals. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings at your own pace.
  • Hotel Shuttles: Many hotels in Rio offer complimentary or paid shuttle services for their guests. It’s advisable to check with your hotel in advance to see if they provide this service and arrange for a pick-up.
  • Executive/VIP Transfers: For a more luxurious experience, executive or VIP transfer services are available. These services can be booked in advance and offer high-end vehicles and professional drivers, providing a premium travel experience from the airport to your destination in Rio.

These transport options cater to different preferences, needs, and budgets, making it easier to choose the most suitable way to reach your destination in Rio de Janeiro.

We stopped in Rio De Janeiro on a cruise, so we walked into the city from the port.

When in Rio De Janeiro with my autistic son, we simply just walked around near the cruise port. I am not sure this is something I’d do again – it was dangerous, we saw blood on the streets and we were warned to put away our phones.

Is Rio De Janeiro Autism-Friendly?

Rio de Janeiro is making progress in becoming more autism-friendly, with growing public awareness, some autism-specific services, and inclusive educational options. However, the city’s busy and vibrant nature can present challenges for individuals with autism, especially those with sensory sensitivities. Families and individuals with autism should plan ahead, research specific accommodations, and connect with local organizations to ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience in the city.

Things That Make Rio De Janeiro Stand Out

  • Public transportation in Rio de Janeiro, including buses, metro, and trains, is widely available but can be crowded and noisy, which may be challenging for individuals with autism. The city’s transport system has some accessibility features, but not all are fully autism-friendly.
  • Rio de Janeiro offers a wide range of attractions, from busy beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema to quieter spots like the Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) and Parque Lage. While the beaches and outdoor attractions can be enjoyable, they can also be overwhelming due to crowds, noise, and heat, especially during peak seasons.
  • Some attractions, such as museums or parks, may offer quiet hours or sensory-friendly environments, but these initiatives are not yet widespread. It’s advisable to research and contact specific venues in advance to inquire about accommodations.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

  1. Plan Ahead: Research each location and contact them to discuss any special accommodations your child might need. If you can plan to arrive after check-in time you should, or try to arrange an early check-in.
  2. Sensory Tools: Bring along sensory tools and comfort items that help manage sensory needs, such as noise-cancelling headphones, sensory toys, and a sensory toolkit.
  3. Clear Communication: Ensure that everyone involved in the trip understands the needs and preferences of the neurodiverse individual. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and enhance the travel experience. Consider using PECS or an AAC. We have a free pack of travel PECS available for download. Consider using our Rio De Janeiro PECS and Brazil PECS to add to your experience.
  4. Safety: Consider getting an autism card for your child, or even better – use our emergency passport for medical information and important contacts. Our absolute must have safety item for travelling with an autistic child is a TinyTags wristband or tag that can be tapped or scanned by a mobile phone – giving the person who tapped it all of the information they need to get your child back to you. TinyTags also feature a location alert to help you find your child.

Rio de Janeiro offers a wide range of activities and accommodations that cater to the needs of families with autistic children. With some preparation and planning, you can enjoy a smooth and memorable holiday in this vibrant and beautiful city.
