If you are travelling to Tunisia through Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport (NBE), knowing what disabled facilities and assistance are available before you arrive can make your journey easier.

Enfidha Airport is a popular arrival point for holidaymakers visiting Hammamet, Sousse, Port El Kantaoui and other resorts along Tunisia’s coast. The airport offers assistance for disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility, although the facilities and processes may be different from those you are familiar with at UK and European airports.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
If you’d like to see what we are getting up to as it’s happening, please give my Instagram a follow @autismfamilytravelguide

Autism Family Travel Guide Instagram

</details>

This guide covers disabled facilities at Enfidha Airport, including special assistance, wheelchair accessibility, accessible toilets and travelling through the airport with a hidden disability.

If you are travelling to Tunisia soon, my guide to visiting Tunisia with autistic children is a good starting point.

Quick Wins for Using Disabled Facilities at Enfidha Airport

Book special assistance through your airline or tour operator at least 48 hours before your flight.

Tell your airline about any mobility equipment, including wheelchairs or mobility scooters, before travelling.

Assistance isn’t only for wheelchair users. You may be able to request support if you have a hidden disability or find navigating airports difficult.

Allow plenty of time when departing from Enfidha Airport, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Bring your own sensory aids, such as noise-cancelling headphones or ear defenders, if you or your child finds busy airports overwhelming.

Speak to your airline in advance if you cannot use aircraft stairs, as your flight may not always board directly from the terminal.

Special Assistance at Enfidha Airport

Passengers who require additional support when travelling through Enfidha Airport should arrange special assistance in advance. The easiest way to do this is through your airline, tour operator or travel agent. Ideally, assistance should be requested at least 48 hours before your scheduled flight.

Depending on your individual needs, assistance may include help with:

Navigating the airport terminal

Reaching the check-in area

Moving through security and passport control

Reaching the departure gate

Boarding the aircraft

Disembarking from the aircraft

Using a wheelchair within the airport

When requesting assistance, explain exactly what support you require rather than simply requesting “wheelchair assistance”. Airlines use different special service request (SSR) codes to communicate passengers’ requirements to airports and ground handling teams. I have a guide which lays out all of the airline disability codes and explains what they mean so you can determine which code is best for your needs.

Providing accurate information can help ensure that the correct assistance and equipment are available.

If you are unsure what support you might need to navigate the airport, my guide to airport assistance explains what it is and the type of help you can request. I also have a guide that explains special assistance at Enfidha Airport in more detail.

One great thing that Enfidha Airport disabled assistance offer is a dedicated Disabled & Special Assistance Telephone Infoline which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can contact the Disabled & Special Assistance team on this number: 00 216 73 103 000

It is also worth learning about the PRM Assist app, where you can make special assistance service requests for almost every airport in the world.

Wheelchair Accessibility at Enfidha Airport

Enfidha Airport is a relatively modern airport, having opened in 2009, and the passenger terminal has been designed to accommodate large numbers of international travellers. The terminal has spacious circulation areas that can make navigating the airport easier for wheelchair and mobility aid users.

Passengers who cannot walk long distances should consider requesting wheelchair assistance in advance, even if they can independently walk shorter distances.

If you are travelling with your own wheelchair or mobility scooter, contact your airline before travelling. Airlines have different rules regarding mobility equipment, particularly powered wheelchairs and scooters containing batteries.

Accessible Toilets at Enfidha Airport

Accessible toilet facilities are available for disabled passengers travelling through the airport.

If you are using special assistance and cannot locate an accessible toilet, ask a member of the assistance team or airport staff to direct you to the nearest facility.

Travellers who require specialist changing facilities should be aware that facilities equivalent to UK Changing Places toilets may not be available. If you require an adult-sized changing bench, hoist or other specialist equipment, it is worth planning for this before travelling.

Hidden Disabilities at Enfidha Airport

Not every passenger who requires assistance has a visible disability. Passengers with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety or other non-visible conditions may find certain parts of the airport journey particularly challenging.

You can request airport assistance for a hidden disability if you need additional help navigating the airport. When making your booking, explain the type of support that would make travelling easier for you or your family member.

Unlike some UK airports, you should not rely on airport staff automatically recognising a hidden disability symbol or lanyard. It can be helpful to communicate your requirements directly with staff. You can, of course, wear the Sunflower Lanyard but it may not be as widely recognised in Tunisia as it is in Europe.

If you are travelling with a hidden disability, I have some guides which may help you plan your upcoming trips: travelling with ADHD, travelling with autism, travelling with fibromyalgia and chronic pain and travelling with allergies.

Travelling Through Enfidha Airport With an Autistic Child

Airports can be particularly challenging for autistic children due to unpredictable queues, security procedures, bright lighting, announcements and crowds. Families may find it helpful to prepare children for the different stages of travelling through Enfidha Airport before their journey.

This could include explaining that they may need to:

Queue at check-in

Show their passport several times

Place belongings through an X-ray machine

Walk through airport security

Wait in the departure lounge

Travel by bus to the aircraft

Walk outside on the airport apron

Use aircraft stairs

Bringing familiar sensory aids can also help. Depending on your child’s needs, this could include ear defenders, noise-cancelling headphones, a tablet, comfort items or small sensory toys.

If your child cannot cope with long queues or crowded environments, contact your airline before travelling to discuss whether assistance can be provided.

One thing that is important to remember for Enfidha Airport is that you cannot take Tunisian Dinar out of Tunisia. They will stop you just before security to take any Tunisian money you have left off of you and this can hold you up in another queue. Learn more about Tunisian currency restrictions in my guide so you can plan to make your airport journey as smooth as possible.

Security at Enfidha Airport

All passengers departing from Enfidha Airport must pass through airport security. Security procedures can be difficult for passengers who struggle with physical contact, instructions from unfamiliar people or having personal belongings taken away temporarily.

If you or your child has additional needs that could affect the security screening process, explain this to staff before screening begins. It can also help to prepare children in advance for the possibility that they may need to remove certain belongings and place bags and other items through the security scanner.

Boarding Your Flight at Enfidha Airport

Depending on where your aircraft is parked, boarding may involve walking to the aircraft or travelling by airport bus. Passengers who cannot climb aircraft stairs should make this clear when booking special assistance. Do not assume that every flight will board using an airbridge.

The WCHS and WCHC assistance codes are particularly important for passengers who cannot use stairs. To learn more about airport assistance codes head straight to my guide.

If you are travelling with a wheelchair or disability pushchair, ask your airline whether you can keep it until the aircraft door. Policies can vary depending on the airline and operational circumstances.

Arriving at Enfidha Airport With Special Assistance

If you have booked assistance for your arrival, assistance staff should help you disembark and navigate the airport. Depending on your requirements, this may include assistance from the aircraft through immigration and baggage reclaim and onwards towards the terminal exit.

If you are travelling with your own wheelchair, confirm with your airline where it will be returned to you. In some airports, mobility equipment may be delivered to the aircraft door, while in other situations it may be collected from baggage reclaim or a separate oversized baggage area.

Parking and Drop-Off at Enfidha Airport

Parking and vehicle drop-off areas are located outside the passenger terminal. If you are being collected by a private transfer, taxi or hotel transport, make sure the driver knows if you are travelling with a wheelchair, large mobility aid or disability pushchair. Accessible vehicles may be more difficult to arrange at short notice, so wheelchair users who require a ramp or lift-equipped vehicle should organise suitable transport before arriving in Tunisia.

Getting From Enfidha Airport to Your Hotel

Many passengers arriving at Enfidha Airport travel onwards to popular tourist destinations including Hammamet, Yasmine Hammamet, Sousse and Port El Kantaoui.

Package holiday travellers may have coach transfers included with their booking. However, standard airport transfer coaches may not be wheelchair accessible.

If you cannot climb the steps of a coach or need to remain seated in your wheelchair during transport, contact your tour operator before travelling.

Travellers arranging private transfers should also confirm accessibility directly with the transport provider rather than assuming that an “accessible” vehicle will meet their individual requirements.

Food and Waiting Areas at Enfidha Airport

Food and drink facilities are available within the airport, although the selection may be more limited than at larger international airports. We found that flying at night meant that almost everything in the airport was closed already.

If you or your child has specific dietary requirements, allergies or strong food preferences, it can be useful to carry suitable snacks for the journey, provided they comply with airport security and customs restrictions.

During busy holiday periods, departure areas can become crowded. Travellers who find noisy environments difficult may benefit from carrying ear defenders or noise-cancelling headphones.

Is There a Sensory Room at Enfidha Airport?

There does not appear to be a dedicated sensory room advertised for passengers travelling through Enfidha Airport. Autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers should therefore plan to bring any sensory equipment they may need while waiting for their flight.

If the terminal is particularly busy, you can ask airport or assistance staff whether there is a quieter place where you can wait, although this may depend on operational circumstances and cannot be guaranteed.

Tips for Disabled Travellers Using Enfidha Airport

Booking assistance in advance is one of the most important things you can do when travelling through Enfidha Airport.

Be specific about your requirements when speaking to your airline. If you cannot walk long distances, cannot climb stairs or require assistance to your aircraft seat, make sure this information is included in your booking.

Travellers with hidden disabilities should also explain what support they need rather than assuming staff will recognise a particular symbol or lanyard.

If you are travelling with an autistic child, preparing them for queues, security checks and the possibility of bus boarding can also make the airport experience more predictable.

Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport provides facilities and assistance for disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility travelling to and from Tunisia. For many disabled travellers, the most important step is arranging the correct special assistance through the airline before travelling. This is particularly important if you require a wheelchair within the airport, cannot climb aircraft stairs or need additional support navigating the terminal.

Families travelling with autistic children or passengers with hidden disabilities may need to do some additional preparation, as dedicated sensory facilities and formal hidden disability schemes may be more limited than at some UK airports.

By booking assistance early, clearly communicating your requirements and planning your onward transport in advance, you can make travelling through Enfidha Airport as straightforward as possible.

If you have further questions about the disabled facilities at Enfidha Airport you can head to their disabled and special assistance information page on the airport website.

Travelling through Tunisia with reduced mobility, hidden disabilities, autism, sensory needs or medical equipment can be much easier when you know where to find airport support in advance.

Most major Tunisian airports offer special assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), wheelchair users, elderly travellers, passengers with hidden disabilities, and families needing extra support. In many cases, assistance should be requested at least 48 hours before travel through your airline.

This guide lists the main airports in Tunisia and where to find their special assistance, disability services or mobility support information. If you are planning to travel in Tunisia, my guide to visiting with autistic children is a good place to begin.

Quick Wins for Using Special Assistance in Tunisia

• Request airport special assistance at least 48 hours before departure
• Add your needs directly through your airline booking where possible
• If flying with Tunisair, special assistance can also be arranged directly through their assistance service
• Keep mobility aids, medication and medical letters in your hand luggage
• Arrive earlier than usual if you need wheelchair support or additional screening time

Tunisia Airport Special Assistance Links

Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN)

The main international airport serving Tunis and one of the busiest airports in North Africa. Special assistance for passengers with reduced mobility is typically arranged through your airline, especially if flying with Tunisair.

Tunis-Carthage International Airport: Special Assistance | There is no direct link to a special assistance page for the Tunis-Carthage International Airport.

Tunisair Special Assistance: Travel carefree – ask for special assistance

Tunisair advises passengers to notify them during booking or contact their call centre for wheelchair support, companions, service animals and other special needs.

Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport (NBE)

Popular for travellers heading to Hammamet, Sousse and surrounding resort areas.

Airport Disability Assistance Page: Disabled & Special Need Passengers

The airport provides a dedicated disabled and special assistance infoline available 24/7 and support for terminal navigation and mobility assistance.

Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport (MIR)

A major holiday airport serving Monastir, Skanes and nearby resorts.

Special assistance is generally handled through your airline, especially via Tunisair, Nouvelair or package holiday carriers such as TUI.

Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport: Special Assistance Services

Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE)

The main airport for Djerba Island and southern Tunisia holiday resorts.

Passengers needing wheelchair services, boarding support or disability assistance should usually request help via their airline in advance.

Djerba-Zarzis International Airport: Special Assistance Information | There is no specific special assistance page availble but there is airport information, maps and passenger service information on the main website.

Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA)

Serving Sfax and central Tunisia.

Most PRM and disability support is arranged through your airline before travel.

Sfax-Thyna International Airport: Secial Assistance Services | Again, no direct special assistance page so I have left the link for the airport website.

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport (TOE)

Useful for desert tourism and southern Tunisia travel.

Airport assistance is normally coordinated through your airline and airport ground services.

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport: Special Assistance Team | There is no special assistance page, I could not even find an official website for the airport so I have left a link to the page I did find with the best set of information on it.

Tabarka-Aïn Draham International Airport (TBJ)

Serving north-west Tunisia and coastal holiday areas.

Passengers requiring support should request PRM services through their airline before travel.

Tabarka-Aïn Draham International Airport: Special Assistance Info | Again, no direct link to a special assistance page and no official website linked on Google so I have left a link to a page with decent airport information.

Gafsa-Ksar International Airport (GAF)

A smaller regional airport with limited services, so advance notice is especially important.

I could not find any websites with decent information about this airport to leave a link to.

Gabès-Matmata International Airport (GAE)

Regional airport serving southern Tunisia.

Support for reduced mobility passengers should be pre-booked through the airline.

Gabès-Matmata International Airport: Special Assistance Services | There was no airport website or special assistance page I could find online for this airport but I did find a good webpage which includes contact information for the airport.

Skanes-Monastir Charter and Regional Flights

Most package holiday flights use assistance support that is arranged through the airline rather than a dedicated airport disability page.

For charter travellers with operators like TUI or Nouvelair, it is important to request assistance when booking.

TUI Assisted Travel: Assisted Travel with TUI

Nouvelair Airport Information: At the Airport – Special Assistance Information

If you are new to assisted travel, my guide to getting help at the airport explains what it is, who can use it and how to book it. It is worth learning about airline disability codes so you can make sure the correct one is applied to your passenger booking – and if you are travelling with someone who has autism then you need to know what the DPNA code is. Before you travel, learn about the Sunflower Lanyard and how it can help you if you travel with a hidden disability.

Tunisair Express Special Assistance

If your domestic or regional Tunisian flight is operated by Tunisair Express, they also provide dedicated support.

Tunisair Express Assistance: Specific Special Assistance

They confirm that airport staff will receive your assistance request in advance when your needs are communicated before travel. Personal mobility equipment such as wheelchairs also receives priority unloading.

If you find that you are struggling to locate any special assistance information for the airport, you can always use the PRM Assist App to book.

How to Request Special Assistance in Tunisia

Most Tunisian airports follow the same process:

Step 1: Contact your airline

This is the most important step. Airports usually do not accept direct PRM bookings from passengers.

Step 2: Give at least 48 hours’ notice

This allows airport teams to prepare wheelchair services, escort support or boarding help.

Step 3: Explain exactly what you need

For example:

• wheelchair to gate
• assistance through security
• support for hidden disability or autism
• help boarding stairs
• support with medical equipment
• travelling with a service animal

Step 4: Arrive early

Special assistance can take longer at check-in and security.

Is Tunisia Good for Accessible Travel?

It depends heavily on the airport and resort area.

Large tourist airports like Enfidha, Monastir, Tunis and Djerba are generally much easier for wheelchair users and families needing assistance than smaller regional airports. Hotel accessibility can vary significantly, so checking transfers and resort access in advance is important.

For autistic travellers, quieter airports like Enfidha can sometimes feel less overwhelming than larger hubs.

Flying to Tunisia with a disability, hidden disability or mobility needs is much easier when support is arranged before you travel.

The biggest mistake families make is assuming the airport will organise everything automatically. In reality, most support starts with your airline booking.

Plan early, request clearly, and use the assistance available – because airports are far less stressful when you do not try to manage them alone.

Flying through Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport with an autistic child, hidden disability, mobility needs, or additional support requirements can feel overwhelming, especially when travelling abroad.

The good news is that special assistance is available at Enfidha Airport for passengers who need extra help. This can include support with check-in, security, boarding, disembarking, and moving through the airport more comfortably.

If your child struggles with queues, sensory overload, transitions, or unfamiliar environments, booking airport assistance can make a huge difference.

If you are planning a wider trip to Tunisia, check out my guide to visiting Tunisia with autistic children.

Quick Wins For Special Assistance at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport

Request special assistance when booking your flight if possible

If already booked, contact your airline at least 48 hours before departure

Arrive earlier than usual so staff have time to organise support

Use the DPNA code if travelling with an autistic or neurodivergent child

Ask about hidden disability support, quieter waiting areas, or priority boarding

Keep medication, comfort items, and important documents in hand luggage

Who Can Use Special Assistance at Enfidha-Hammamet?

Special assistance is not just for wheelchair users.

You can request help if you or your child has:

Autism

ADHD

Sensory processing difficulties

Anxiety around airports or flying

A hidden disability

Reduced mobility

A medical condition affecting travel

Temporary injuries

Visual or hearing impairments

Difficulty managing queues, crowds, or long walks

Many families travelling with autistic children use assistance purely for airport navigation and reducing stress. Learn more about the support you can get at the airport as a person with a disability or hidden disability.

Using the DPNA Code at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport

DPNA stands for Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance.

This code can be added to your flight booking and is especially helpful for autistic children and adults, even when there are no physical mobility issues.

It helps airline and airport staff understand that support may be needed with:

Communication

Processing instructions

Sensory overload

Waiting in queues

Boarding and transitions

Unexpected changes

If your airline does not mention DPNA, simply explain your child’s needs and ask for it to be added manually. If you are new to the DPNA code, my guide explains what DPNA is and how it can help travellers with hidden disabilities.

I wanted to mentioned that when we flew out of Enfidha-Hammamet Airport we had a different code on our boarding passes – SSRS. SSR in this context means ‘special service request’ which is another way of saying the passenger asked for special asssistance. I believe they used SSRS in place of DPNA, but I am unsure why exactly.

Airports and airlines use codes to explain, categorise or group certain things – you can learn more about the codes they use in my guide. When it comes to disabilities and special service requests, the codes are 4 letters long and have a specific meaning. Each one tells airport and airline staff what type of help the passenger needs. I have a seperate guide about airport and airline disability codes that helps you understand them and who should use them.

How to Book Special Assistance at Enfidha Airport

In most cases, you do not book directly with the airport. You request assistance through your airline, holiday provider, or travel agent. However, Enfidha-Hammamet Airport does have a webpage dedicated to special assistance services which has a lot of information on it that can help you while you plan your trip to Tunisia.

This is especially common for package holidays to Tunisia.

Try to request support:

At the time of booking, or

At least 48 hours before departure

You may be asked:

Whether wheelchair support is needed

Whether help is needed through security

If assistance is needed for boarding

Whether the passenger has autism or another hidden disability

If travelling with medical equipment or medication

Be specific. Saying “autistic child who struggles with queues and busy waiting areas” is far more helpful than simply saying “special needs.”

You can also use the PRM Assist app to make a special service request – but the most reliable way is to contact the airline directly. I would recommend using PRM Assist to make a booking anyway so you can track your bookings and have a backup.

Contact Enfidha-Hammamet Airport Assistance Services Department

You can contact the airport special assistance team directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The staff are trained in travelling with a disability and are respectful and prompt at helping passengers plan their travel through Enfidha-Hammamet Airport with a disability. There are also multi-lingual staff on hand to help passengers in different languages.

Telephone: 00 216 73 103 000

What Help You Can Expect at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport

Depending on your needs, support may include:

Help from the terminal entrance to check-in

Assistance through passport control and security

Priority or supported boarding

Help reaching the departure gate

Buggy or wheelchair transport if needed

Support during arrival and baggage collection

Assistance to the arrivals area or transfer transport

If you are travelling with a pushchair, mobility aid, or medical equipment, staff can also help guide you through the process.

For a breakdown of the type of help you can get at the airport, my guide discusses this in detail.

Hidden Disabilities and Autism Support

Airport support for hidden disabilities can vary more outside the UK, so it helps to prepare in advance.

Not all staff may be familiar with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard scheme, but it can still be useful for visually signalling that extra patience may be needed.

Useful things to bring include:

Sunflower lanyard

Noise-cancelling headphones

Safe snacks

Familiar comfort items

Tablet or favourite activity

Printed boarding passes

Medication and medical letters if needed

A visual plan of the airport journey can also help reduce anxiety.

Arrival Tips for Enfidha Airport

Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport is often used by families travelling to resorts in Hammamet, Sousse, Port El Kantaoui, and Yasmine Hammamet. If you are planning a trip to Yasmine Hammamet, my guide explains what to expect when visiting Yasmine Hammamet with autistic children.

During peak holiday seasons, queues can be long and the terminal can become busy and noisy.

That makes pre-booked assistance especially valuable for families with autistic children or sensory-sensitive travellers.

If you are travelling on a package holiday, check whether your transfer company is aware of any mobility needs too.

Airport assistance usually ends once you reach your arrivals area or transfer point.

Medication and Medical Equipment

If you are travelling with prescription medication, controlled medication, or items like EpiPens, nebulisers, or feeding equipment, always keep these in your hand luggage.

Bring:

Original packaging

Prescription labels

A GP or doctor’s letter where appropriate

Extra supplies in case of delays

This is especially important when travelling internationally.

My guides to travelling with ADHD, what to include on a medication letter for travelling, and flying with medical luggage are a great place to start planning your trip with medicines and medical equipment.

Special assistance at Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport can completely change the airport experience for families travelling with autistic children or additional needs and you do not need to wait until things become difficult to ask for support.

Booking help early can mean less stress, fewer meltdowns, smoother transitions, and a much better start to your holiday.

If flying feels overwhelming, this is one of the easiest travel tools to make the journey more manageable.

What is the Tunisian currency?

The official currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND). It is a closed currency, which means it cannot legally be imported or exported.

Unlike euros or dollars, you won’t be able to buy Tunisian dinar before you arrive, and you are not allowed to take it home with you.

Bringing money into Tunisia

You cannot bring Tunisian dinar into the country.

Instead, you should bring foreign currency such as pounds, euros or US dollars and exchange it once you arrive. This can be done at:

Airport exchange counters

Banks

Hotels (often at slightly worse rates)

If you are bringing in a large amount of foreign currency (typically the equivalent of 5,000 TND or more), you should declare it on arrival. This declaration is important if you plan to exchange it and later convert it back when leaving.

At the time of posting, these are the equivalents of 5000 Tunisian Dinar in GBP, Euro and USD.

Tunisian Dinar

British Pound

Euro

US Dollar

5000

1273.60

1473.93

1711.74

Taking Tunisian Dinar out of Tunisia

This is where many travellers get caught out.

You are not allowed to take Tunisian dinar out of Tunisia. Not even small amounts as souvenirs.

At the airport, security and customs officers may check your wallet, bags or hand luggage. If they find dinars, they can confiscate them.

In many cases:

The money is taken from you

You are given a receipt which details how much money you handed in to officials

If you return to Tunisia in the future, you may be able to reclaim it at the airport using that receipt

However, this is not guaranteed to be straightforward, and many travellers never reclaim it. The receipt also has a time limit in which you can collect it, and it seems that you can only collect the money from the same airport you handed it in at.

What happens if you try to take money out?

For small amounts, the usual outcome is confiscation.

For larger amounts or if it appears deliberate, you could face:

Fines

Delays at the airport

Questioning by customs officials

Tunisia takes currency control seriously, so it’s not something to risk.

How to avoid losing money

The key is to plan ahead before you leave the country.

Before heading to the airport:

Spend any remaining dinars

Exchange them back into foreign currency at an authorised exchange office

Keep your exchange receipts – you may need them to convert money back

You usually need proof (receipts) showing where and how you exchanged your money in the first place.

Important tips:

Exchange offices at the airport can convert leftover dinars back, but queues can be long

Rates may not be ideal, but it’s better than losing the money completely

Don’t leave this until the last minute

Can you use cards instead?

Yes – and this is often the easiest way to avoid leftover cash.

In tourist areas, hotels, larger restaurants and some shops accept card payments. However, cash is still widely used, especially in smaller towns, الأسواق (markets) and taxis.

To order food we often used the Glovo app in Yasmine Hammamet, Tunisia. This allowed us to use cards instead of cash. If you plan to visit Yasmine Hammamet like we did, my guide to Yasmine Hammamet is a good starting point. I booked our airport taxi online using a website for the transfer company, again allowing me to pay by cash.

A balanced approach works best:

Use card where possible

Withdraw or exchange smaller amounts of cash as needed

I would recommend getting a bank that allows you to hold multiple currencies for when you travel. I like to use Wise, previously known as Transferwise. The app allows you to hold multiple currencies and monitor spending in real time. If you want to explore it, you can use my Wise referral link: Wise referral.

Otherwise, any other credit card or debit card should be okay but do remember to tell your bank that you plan to travel to avoid card blockages.

Earn travel rewards on your spends: Credit Cards with travel rewards for Brits

Summary about bringing Tunisian Dinar in and out of Tunisia

You cannot bring Tunisian dinar into Tunisia

You cannot take Tunisian dinar out of Tunisia

Any dinars found at the airport may be confiscated

Tunisian dinar will be confiscated before you can shop in Duty Free

You may receive a receipt to reclaim the money if you return

Larger amounts could result in fines or delays

Always exchange leftover dinars before leaving

This is one of those rules that feels easy to ignore – until you’re standing at airport security having money taken out of your wallet. The security team ask literally everyone if they have any Tunisian money on them before they head to security to have bags scanned, so you cannot skip being asked.

If you treat Tunisian dinar as “use it or exchange it before you leave,” you’ll avoid any issues and keep your trip stress-free right to the end.

Yasmine Hammamet is one of Tunisia’s most popular resort areas, and for families travelling with autistic children, it offers something that’s often hard to find on holiday: predictability. Built specifically for tourism, Yasmine Hammamet is laid out in a clear, easy-to-navigate way, with wide pavements, modern hotels, and large all-inclusive resorts designed to keep everything in one place. For children who thrive on routine, familiarity, and having a safe retreat close by, this kind of environment can make a huge difference.

In this guide, I’m sharing what it’s really like to visit Yasmine Hammamet with children, what works well from a sensory point of view, and how to make the experience as smooth and low-stress as possible for the whole family.

Getting to Yasmine Hammamet

Yasmine Hammamet is a purpose-built resort area on Tunisia’s north-east coast and is one of the easiest destinations in the country to reach with children. Most families arrive via Enfidha–Hammamet International Airport, which is around a 40–45 minute drive away. Some flights may land at Tunis–Carthage Airport, which is closer to 1 hour 15 minutes by road.

Airport transfers are straightforward and widely offered by hotels, package providers, or private taxi companies. For autistic children, a pre-booked private transfer is usually the calmest option, avoiding negotiation, crowds, and waiting times.

Private Transfer (Pre-Booked): This is usually the easiest and calmest option for families. Private transfers can be arranged through hotels, tour operators, or local transfer companies and will meet you directly at arrivals.

Hotel transfer: Many package holidays include shared or private transfers as part of the booking. This option usually involved a coach which stops in multiple locations dropping people off at each stop. If your child finds long journeys or repeated stops difficult, it’s worth checking whether you can upgrade to a private option.

Taxi: Taxis are available outside the terminal, but this option requires a bit more flexibility. When we landed, we could not see any taxis and the easyJet team told us there were none that day (hmm?) and that they must be on strike. I am not sure how true that it, but if you do wish to get a taxi then you should turn left when you leave the airport.

Transfer bus: If you turn left when you leave the airport, you will find a whole bunch of coaches which are travelling to nearby towns. You do not need to have prebooked to use these, just speak to a member of staff who is outside the bus and tell them where you want to go and they will direct you to the right bus. We got on bus 8 and that took us to right outside of our hotel in Yasmine Hammamet and cost £10 per person.

Bus + Taxi Combination: There is no direct public bus from Enfidha Airport to Yasmine Hammamet. Some travellers use a combination of an airport taxi to Enfidha town or Hammamet and then get on a local louage (shared minibus) or taxi onward. This option involves multiple changes and unpredictability and may not be the easiest option for families with an autistic child.

Where to stay in Yasmine Hammamet

Yasmine Hammamet is dominated by large, self-contained resorts, which is exactly why many families choose it. All-inclusive hotels are the norm here and can be a big win for autistic children because:

They offer predictable meal times

Familiar buffet layouts

On-site pools and entertainment

No daily travel pressure

Many resorts sit directly on the beachfront, while others are just across the road with private beach access.

When choosing accommodation, it’s worth looking for:

Family rooms or suites with separation

Quieter pool areas

Restaurants that allow flexible dining times

Ground-floor rooms if lifts are challenging

Because Yasmine Hammamet was designed for tourism, pavements are wide, roads are flat, and hotels are generally accessible with buggies and wheelchairs. There are many paved areas in Yasmine Hammamet, and these become uneven where tree roots have grown and pushed slabs or bricks upwards. I mention that just to be as clear as possible about what you may be up against.

We chose to stay at the hotel Diar Lemdina in Yasmine Hammamet. We chose this hotel because it seemed to offer a lot for families (and especially appealed to some of the things we need as a family with autistic children) such as:

Indoor (heated) and outdoor pools

Close to the beach

Right beside the medina

Nearby waterpark and theme park

Buffet breakfast restaurant

Large apartments instead of just bedrooms

Family-Friendly Activities in Yasmine Hammamet

Carthage Land Theme Park

Carthage Land sits right in the centre of Yasmine Hammamet and is within walking distance of many hotels, especially Diar Lemdina which is no more than 5 minutes walk away. It’s a small theme park with rides aimed mainly at younger children. There’s also a water park section during the warmer months.

From a sensory point of view:

Mornings are much calmer

Ride queues are short compared to European parks

Music can be loud in places, so ear defenders may help

Yasmine Hammamet Marina

The marina is one of the nicest places to wander with children. It’s pedestrianised, flat (mostly), and lined with boats, cafés, and souvenir shops. Many families find it a good low-pressure outing where children can:

Watch boats

Walk freely without traffic

Choose when to stop or leave

It’s especially peaceful in the morning or early evening. We went there in the early afternoon, but it was also February and off-season and still nice and quiet.

There are many people there trying to sell to you, get you on boat and even try to get you to hold animals (which I assume they then try to charge for as this is what happened to us a while ago in Thailand).
The Medina Mediterranea

The Medina in Yasmine Hammamet is a reconstructed, tourist-friendly version rather than a traditional old town. That actually makes it more manageable for autistic children:

I recommend beginning at the Medina Mediterannea gate, it is a great starting point right beside the entrange to hotel Diar Lemdina.
Visit the beach

The beaches here are long, sandy, and gently sloping — ideal for children who like predictable environments. Many hotels have private sections with:

Sunbeds close together

Calm sea conditions most days

Easy access back to rooms or toilets

Early mornings tend to be the quietest and coolest time for sensory-sensitive children. Some areas of the beach we visited were really badly covered with trash and destroyed beach restaurants. You do need to be careful in these areas as there was also a lot of broken glass and torn metal pieces.

Hammamet Old Town

Hammamet Old Town is one of the most atmospheric places to visit near Yasmine Hammamet, sitting right by the sea and surrounded by historic stone walls. It is only a short taxi ride from Yasmine Hammamet and you can book tours via GetYourGuide.

Inside the medina, you’ll find:

The old fortress walls overlooking the sea

Narrow pedestrian-only streets

Small shops selling ceramics, leather goods, textiles, spices, and souvenirs

Cafés tucked into courtyards

What makes Hammamet Old Town special is the setting. Unlike some medinas that feel overwhelming or chaotic, Hammamet’s is relatively compact and walkable, and the coastal views add a calmer, more open feel — especially near the outer walls.

Aqualand

Aqualand Hammamet is a water park located close to Yasmine Hammamet, designed with families in mind rather than thrill-seekers.

You can expect:

A mix of gentle slides and larger flumes

Shallow splash areas for younger children

Pool-based attractions rather than extreme rides

Lifeguards visible around main pools

You can opt to buy a package for entry to Aqualand and Carthage land to get a better price on your trickets. If you are staying at Diar Lemdina, keep in mind that you get access to the Aqualand waterpark via the hotel as part of your package (but it is not open all year).

Miki and Mike Park

Miki and Mike Park is a small, child-focused outdoor amusement area aimed mainly at younger children. You can expect:

Gentle rides

Mini fairground-style attractions

Cartoon-themed visuals

A compact, enclosed layout

There are many types of rides, but the most obvious are the inflatables with cartoon characters like SpongeBob.

Getting Around Yasmine Hammamet With Autistic Children

Yasmine Hammamet is one of the easiest places in Tunisia to navigate. We found it so easy to walk around and find our way (even without using Google maps at times)!

The area is flat (mostly, but it is paved in many places and these move with tree roots) and walkable

Taxis are inexpensive and easy to use

Journeys are short and predictable

Most trips take under 10 minutes, which reduces stress for children who struggle with long journeys. For longer outings, booking taxis through your hotel adds an extra layer of predictability. I usually like to book drivers via an app when I am abroad, it saves me getting distressed about the cost or where we are because I can always track it. I did not need to use a driver in Yasmine Hammamet as we were only there for a few days and opted to stay local and order food in when we needed it. I used an airport transfer on the last day and did this online to ensure we got exactly what we needed.

You will also find many people will offer you to ride on a horse and cart, there is a small train (which drives on the road) and also camels.

Is Yasmine Hammamet Autism-Friendly?

Although Yasmine Hammamet is not marketed or certified as an autism-friendly destination, we found it to be a lovely place which was easy to navigate and avoid over-stimulation. This is because there is a lot to see and do in a small area with a lot of it being family-friendly like the waterpark and arcades.

Things That Make Yasmine Hammamet Stand Out

Yasmine Hammamet works well for autistic families because it offers:

Predictable resort environments

Minimal pressure to explore

Simple layouts

Short travel distances

Easy retreat back to accommodation

While Tunisia isn’t marketed as an autism-friendly destination, this specific area naturally suits families who need structure, familiarity, and flexibility. The large resort-style hotels offering everything you may possibly need, with big pools which offer ample opportunity for water play.

Tips for a Smooth Experience
