Knowing how to use Google Maps offline is only one way to make travel easier. You may also find it helpful to explore the Google Maps accessibility features available for wheelchair users and disabled travellers.

A downloaded map can help when mobile data is expensive, the signal is unreliable or you want to reduce the number of things that might go wrong on a journey.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
If you’d like to see what we are getting up to as it’s happening, please give my Instagram a follow @autismfamilytravelguide

Autism Family Travel Guide Instagram

</details>

This can be particularly useful for autistic travellers, families travelling with autistic children and disabled travellers who benefit from checking routes in advance. Offline maps can also provide a reassuring backup when you are navigating an unfamiliar place.

Google Maps is one of several apps that help make travel easier. You can also see our list of apps we won’t travel without when travelling with autistic children.

What Is an Offline Map in Google Maps?

An offline map is a section of Google Maps saved to your phone or tablet. Once it has downloaded, you can view that area without a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection.

You can also use offline driving navigation when the whole route is inside the downloaded area. However, some features are limited when you are offline, so it is important to understand what the download does and does not include.

How to Download Google Maps for Offline Use

The steps are very similar on Android phones, iPhones and iPads. Before you begin, connect to Wi-Fi if possible and make sure you are signed in to the Google Maps app.

Method One: Select Your Own Map Area

Open the Google Maps app.

Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.

Tap Offline maps.

Tap Select your own map.

Move and zoom the map until the area you need is inside the highlighted box.

Check the estimated download size shown on the screen.

Tap Download.

For a city break, include the airport or railway station, your accommodation and the places you plan to visit. For a road trip, you may need several overlapping downloads to cover the whole journey.

Method Two: Download a Map From a Place Search

You may also be able to download an area after searching for a destination.

Search for a city, town or other destination in Google Maps.

Tap the place name or information panel at the bottom of the screen.

Open the additional options. Depending on your device, this may appear as a menu or a three-dot icon.

Tap Download offline map.

Adjust the area and tap Download.

Google occasionally changes the position or wording of app controls. If you cannot see the download option from the place page, use the Offline maps menu and choose your own area instead.

How to Use Google Maps Offline

Once the map has downloaded, you do not need to open a separate file. Use Google Maps as normal.

Open Google Maps.

Search for a place inside the downloaded area.

View the map or request driving directions.

Start navigation if the whole driving route is included in your saved map.

If your internet connection is slow or unavailable, Google Maps should use the downloaded information automatically. You can test this before travelling by switching your phone to aeroplane mode, leaving location services turned on and trying a route inside the downloaded area.

What Works Offline and What Does Not?

Offline Google Maps is useful, but it is not a complete replacement for an internet connection.

What You Can Usually Do Offline

View roads, place names and basic map information in the downloaded area.

Search for many places within that area.

Get driving directions when the entire route is covered by the download.

Use turn-by-turn driving navigation.

What Is Not Available Offline

Walking directions.

Cycling directions.

Public transport directions.

Live traffic information.

Alternative driving routes based on current conditions.

Other live updates that depend on an internet connection.

This limitation matters if you rely on step-free public transport, accessible taxi information or detailed walking routes. Downloading the map is still useful, but you should also save the essential journey details separately.

For more information about accessible transport around the world, my guide has transport guides based on country and cities and I continue to add to these the more we travel.

Tips for Autistic and Disabled Travellers

A map can reduce uncertainty, but it should be part of a wider travel plan rather than the only source of information.

Download More Than the Immediate Destination

Include a wider area around your planned route. This gives you more flexibility if a road is closed, your drop-off point changes or you need to find a quieter place nearby, source the nearest playground or locate an accessible toilet.

Save Important Addresses Separately

Keep your accommodation address, airport terminal, hospital, pharmacy and emergency contact details in a note or screenshot. If you’re downloading maps for an airport, it’s also worth checking the airport’s special assistance arrangements before you travel.

This makes the information easier to show to a driver or member of staff. You may also want to save important locations using What3Words, which can make it easier to direct taxis or emergency services to an exact location.

Take Screenshots of Key Routes

Screenshots can be easier to follow during a stressful moment. Capture the route from the arrival point to your accommodation, the correct station exit and any meeting points for assistance.

Check Accessibility Information While Online

Offline maps do not guarantee that accessibility details will be complete or current. Check official transport and venue information before travelling. This is especially important for lifts, step-free routes, accessible toilets, mobility equipment and assistance services.

Prepare a Low-Tech Backup

Write down the address and phone number of your accommodation. A small printed map, hotel card or travel communication card can help if your phone battery runs out or the app does not work as expected. You may also find it useful to learn key disability travel phrases before your trip so you can explain your needs even without internet access.

How Much Storage Do Offline Maps Use?

The download size depends on the area and the level of map detail. Google Maps shows an estimate before you confirm the download.

If your phone has limited storage, download only the areas you need and remove old maps after the trip. Android users may have the option to save offline maps to an SD card, depending on the device.

How to Update, Rename or Delete an Offline Map

Open Google Maps.

Tap your profile picture or initial.

Tap Offline maps.

Select the downloaded map you want to manage.

Choose the available option to update, rename or delete it.

Offline maps need to be updated before they expire. Google Maps can try to update them automatically when the expiry date is close and your device is connected to Wi-Fi. You can check the offline-map settings to turn automatic updates on.

Troubleshooting Google Maps Offline

The Route Will Not Start

Check that the complete route is inside the downloaded area. Offline navigation is for driving routes, not walking, cycling or public transport.

The Map Has Expired

Connect to the internet, open Offline maps, select the area and tap the update option. Turning on automatic updates can help prevent this problem.

Your Location Is Not Showing Correctly

Make sure location services are enabled for Google Maps. GPS can work without mobile data, but tall buildings, tunnels and indoor spaces can reduce accuracy.

The Download Is Too Large

Zoom in to reduce the selected area or split the journey into several smaller maps. Delete downloads from previous trips if you need more storage.

If you’ve travelled in Europe before, you might remember the EHIC card. Since Brexit, the system has changed slightly — but the protection hasn’t disappeared.

The UK now issues the GHIC instead.

Here’s exactly what that means for you and your family.

What Is the GHIC Card?

The GHIC stands for the UK Global Health Insurance Card. It allows UK residents to access state-provided healthcare in certain European countries at the same cost as a local resident.

That might mean free treatment. Or it might mean you pay a reduced fee.

It does not mean private healthcare, mountain rescue or repatriation. It is not a replacement for travel insurance.

Think of it as a safety net for medically necessary state healthcare while you’re abroad.

Wasn’t It Called the EHIC?

Yes. The old card was the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). After the UK left the EU, new applications switched to the GHIC. If you still have a valid UK-issued EHIC, you can continue to use it until it expires. You do not need to replace it early.

Once it expires, you apply for a GHIC instead.

Important: Some people may still be eligible for a new UK EHIC rather than a GHIC (for example certain EU nationals living in the UK, students studying in the EU, or people covered under withdrawal agreements). But for most UK travellers, the GHIC is the correct card.

Where Is the GHIC Valid?

The GHIC is valid in:

EU countries (27 countries from the European Economic Area plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)

Switzerland for those meeting certain criteria

Montenegro

Australia

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

St Helena, Tristan and Ascension

The GHIC card does not cover you in countries outside these agreements. Always double-check before travelling, as agreements can change.

What Does the GHIC Actually Cover?

The GHIC covers state-provided healthcare that becomes medically necessary during your trip. That includes:

Emergency treatment

Treatment for pre-existing medical conditions

Maternity care (if it cannot reasonably wait until you return home)

Routine care for chronic conditions such as dialysis or oxygen therapy (with prior arrangement)

It does not cover:

Private healthcare

Mountain rescue

Cruise ship medical treatment

Flights home if you need repatriation

Lost or stolen property

You still need proper travel insurance. The GHIC works alongside insurance — it does not replace it.

Who Can Get a GHIC?

You can apply if you are:

A UK resident

Ordinarily resident in the UK

Entitled to NHS care

Each family member needs their own card, including children. You can apply for your children at the same time as your own application.

If you travel regularly as a family, make checking GHIC expiry dates part of your travel planning routine.

Is the GHIC Free?

Yes. Completely free.

If a website tries to charge you a fee, it is not the official government site. There are third-party websites that charge to “assist” with applications, but you do not need them.

Only apply through the official NHS website.

How to Apply for a GHIC

Applications are made online through the NHS website.

You’ll need:

Your full name and address

Your date of birth

Your NHS number (if known)

National Insurance number (sometimes requested)

Most cards arrive within a few weeks, so do not leave it until the week before travel.

If you are travelling urgently and your card hasn’t arrived, you can request a temporary replacement certificate to cover you.

How Long Does a GHIC Last?

Most GHIC cards are valid for five years.

Set a calendar reminder to check expiry before booking European travel. It is one of those small admin tasks that is easy to forget.

Do You Need One If You Have Travel Insurance?

Yes. If you receive state healthcare in Europe and present your GHIC, the cost is often reduced or covered entirely by the local system.

Without it, you may have to pay more upfront and then claim back through insurance. It can simplify treatment and reduce paperwork.

But you still need travel insurance for everything the GHIC does not cover.

Key Things Families Often Forget

If you travel with children:

Each child needs their own GHIC.

Check expiry dates before booking any trips.

Carry the physical card with you.

If your card is lost while travelling, contact the NHS for a temporary replacement certificate.

The name has changed from EHIC to GHIC, but the principle is the same: access to necessary state healthcare while travelling in Europe.

It’s free.
It’s easy to apply.
And it’s worth having.

If Europe is on your travel list this year, sort your GHIC now — not the night before you fly.

Other cards to consider

I have a whole post dedicated to disability cards for those of use in the UK, but the ones I really recommend are:

The Sunflower Lanyard

Access Card

Blue Badge

Companion bus pass

If you are ready to start planning your trip to Europe, head to my Europe travel hub where you can find guides to all of the countries I have visited in Europe to help you plan your own time there.

Travel rewards cards can turn everyday spending into free flights, hotel nights or handy travel perks. Below is a UK-focused round-up of the main cards that earn airline miles, flexible points or hotel points, plus supermarket and fintech options that convert to travel rewards. I have listed some of the best travel reward cards in the UK and included information on the typical sign-up bonuses (low, medium or high because the actual number can be different depending on where you sign up from), stand-out perks and fees.

British Airways American Express Credit Card (free)

A straightforward starter for Avios collectors with no annual fee. The sign-up bonus is typically modest for meeting a small spend in the first three months, and the earn rate is 1 Avios per £1 on all spending. That makes it easy to build a balance from daily purchases without worrying about categories.

You can earn a Companion Voucher after £15,000 of card spend in your membership year. On this free version it is usually valid for economy cabins and has a shorter validity than the premium card, but it is still very useful for families. Remember to use the British Airways Avios shopping portal before online purchases to stack extra Avios on top of your card earnings.

British Airways American Express Premium Plus

The premium Avios Amex is often the go-to for serious Avios collectors. This is the credit card I use most often for Avios. The welcome bonus is usually much higher than the free card, in exchange for a sizeable annual fee. You earn 1.5 Avios per £1 on general spend and an elevated rate on British Airways purchases, helping balances grow quickly.

BA Amex Premium Plus referral: Natasha’s BA Amex referral

For the above, expect 30000 points by spending £6000 within the first 3 months

Its Companion Voucher is the headline perk. You trigger it at £15,000 annual spend, it lasts longer and can be used in any cabin, which is where the real value lies for long-haul trips with children. As with the free card, always click through the BA Avios shopping portal to boost your haul when buying online.

British Airways Accelerating Business Card (American Express Business)

A strong option for limited companies and sole traders who want Avios from business spend. The welcome bonus is typically generous for meeting an initial spend target, the annual fee sits in the mid-range, and the card earns 1.5 Avios per £1 on everything. Paid BA flights on the card also earn British Airways On Business points, which can be redeemed for discounts or reward seats for the company.

There are additional business-friendly incentives, such as tiered Avios bonuses at higher annual spend levels and free supplementary cards for employees. Pair it with the BA Avios shopping portal for office supplies and technology purchases to add extra Avios on top of the card earn.

Barclaycard Avios Mastercard (free)

An excellent no-fee Mastercard for places that do not accept Amex. I use this card to have an option for those places where Amex is not accepted (which can be common in the UK).T he sign-up bonus is usually achievable with a modest initial spend, and you earn 1 Avios per £1 on general spending, with an uplift on BA purchases. It fills the acceptance gaps so you keep earning Avios on council tax, smaller merchants and billers.

You can earn a British Airways cabin upgrade voucher after £20,000 of annual spend. While the threshold is higher than on the paid version, it is still a valuable perk if you channel most non-Amex spend here. Its wider acceptance also makes it a useful card for overseas transactions compared with Amex.

Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard

The paid version turns the dial up on both earnings and bonuses. You usually see a larger welcome bonus for meeting the initial spend and an earn rate of 1.5 Avios per £1 on everything, with an enhanced rate on BA purchases. The monthly fee is offset quickly if you put meaningful spend through a Mastercard.

The BA cabin upgrade voucher triggers at £10,000 annual spend on this card, which many households can hit with bills, groceries and travel. It is a very effective partner to a BA Amex, giving premium-cabin value with broader merchant acceptance.

Virgin Atlantic Reward Mastercard (free)

A simple, free route into Virgin Points. The sign-up bonus is typically small but easy to earn, and the ongoing rate is 0.75 Virgin Points per £1 on everyday spend, with a higher rate on Virgin Atlantic purchases. That makes it a sensible card for topping up balances if you fly or redeem with Virgin.

Spend £20,000 in a card year and you earn a Virgin Atlantic reward voucher. You can use it as a companion ticket on a reward booking or to upgrade a reward seat by one cabin, which adds flexibility depending on whether you travel solo or with a partner. Do not forget the Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic online shopping portals, which regularly offer bonus points on everyday retailers and can dramatically increase your haul.

Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard

The paid version adds a chunky welcome bonus for a relatively low annual fee and doubles the everyday earn to 1.5 Virgin Points per £1, with an elevated rate on Virgin purchases. If you concentrate spending on one card, this is one of the quickest ways to build a meaningful Virgin Points balance.

The reward voucher triggers at £10,000 of annual spend rather than £20,000, making it far easier to secure each year. Used well, it can deliver superb value on premium cabins to the USA and Caribbean, particularly when taxes and fees are reasonable on Virgin redemptions.

American Express Preferred Rewards Gold

A flexible points card that suits beginners and seasoned collectors alike. The welcome bonus is often attractive and the fee is waived in year one. You earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 on general spend, with periodic boosted rates on travel booked through the issuer.

Membership Rewards points transfer to multiple airline schemes including Avios and Virgin, and to hotel programmes, giving you choice if award availability is tight. You also receive a small bundle of lounge passes each year and regular card offers, which together can outweigh the fee if you travel a few times.

American Express Platinum

A premium travel card aimed at frequent flyers who value benefits as much as points. The welcome bonus can be very large, the annual fee is high, and you earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 on general spend. The power here lies in lounge access, hotel statuses, comprehensive travel insurance and periodic statement credits.

If you will use airport lounges regularly and can take advantage of hotel perks and credits, the net cost can be compelling. Points remain fully transferable to airline and hotel partners, so you keep flexibility when planning redemptions.

American Express Nectar Credit Card

A handy route to Avios via Nectar. The sign-up bonus is usually strong for a low annual fee that is often waived in year one. You earn 2 Nectar points per £1 on all spending, and Nectar converts into Avios at a published rate, equating to roughly 1.25 Avios per £1 if you choose to convert.

Nectar Amex referral: Natasha’s Nectar Amex referral

For the above, expect 21000 points by spending £2000 within the first 3 months

Because Nectar can also be spent at supermarkets and other UK retailers, you have the safety of a cash-like redemption if you are not booking flights imminently. If you are a regular at Nectar partners, this can out-earn many direct Avios cards on everyday spend.

This is the first reward card I had that I took seriously and over the years I have earned so many Nectar points and spent them with a range of redemption partners.

Marriott Bonvoy American Express

The main hotel card currently open to UK applicants. The welcome bonus is typically enough for a mid-range free night and the card earns Marriott Bonvoy points on all spend, with a higher rate at Marriott hotels. Points can be redeemed for hotel stays or transferred to many airline partners, including Avios, at a published ratio.

Cardholders receive annual elite night credits towards status and can unlock a free night certificate with higher annual spend. If you stay with Marriott a few times a year, the on-property bonuses and status benefits add up, while the ability to convert to airline miles keeps your options open.

Tesco Clubcard Credit Card

Clubcard points do not go to Avios directly any more, but they still convert into Virgin Points at a set rate. The Tesco credit card earns additional Clubcard points on top of your regular Clubcard earnings, with a higher earn on Tesco spend and a lower rate elsewhere.

If you already collect Clubcard points through groceries and fuel, funnelling spend through the Tesco credit card adds to your quarterly vouchers, which you can auto-convert to Virgin. It is a low-effort way to keep a trickle of travel points coming in without fees.

Sainsbury’s Bank Nectar Credit Cards

These Visa and Mastercard options earn Nectar points on top of your in-store Nectar earnings. The headline sign-up bonuses come and go, but the appeal is steady Nectar accrual on places that do not take Amex.

Because Nectar converts into Avios, these cards act as a useful back-up for bills and merchants that refuse Amex. They are also practical if you prioritise cash-like Nectar redemptions at the till when you are not planning a flight.

HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard

A powerful flexible-points Mastercard if you qualify for HSBC Premier. The welcome bonus is usually strong, the annual fee sits in the premium bracket, and the everyday earn rate is competitive with the best airline cards. Points transfer to Avios and a wide range of other airline and hotel partners.

You also receive unlimited lounge access for the primary cardholder via a lounge programme, along with travel insurances and occasional transfer bonuses to partners. For those who prefer Mastercard acceptance and flexibility over being tied to a single airline, it is a compelling alternative.

Capital on Tap Business Rewards Visa

A stand-out for small businesses and limited companies who want Avios on a Visa with no fuss. The sign-up offer is frequently available, the free plan has no annual fee, and you earn 1 point per £1 which converts to 1 Avios per £1.

There are no foreign transaction fees, high potential credit limits and the option for employee cards. If you pay suppliers, advertising or taxes from a business account, this card can generate substantial Avios without touching a personal Amex.

American Express Business Gold

The business counterpart to personal Gold with a strong welcome bonus, no fee in the first year and 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 on everything. It includes a small bundle of lounge visits and useful expense tools.

Because Membership Rewards transfer to multiple airlines and hotels, it is ideal for turning unavoidable business spend into family travel. Business sign-up rules are often more forgiving than consumer ones, which makes the bonus particularly attractive.

We use one of these for our limited company. You can request cards for employees which makes spending and tracking spending easy, and earning points even easier!

American Express Business Platinum

A premium business card with a very large welcome bonus and a high annual fee. You earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1, with a higher rate for large individual transactions, and receive comprehensive lounge access, travel insurance and hotel statuses similar to the personal version.

If you travel frequently for work, the benefits can deliver excellent value, while the sizeable welcome bonus converts into a major head start in Avios or other airline miles. It pairs well with a business Visa like Capital on Tap to capture every pound of company spend.

Bonus: Extra Ways To Earn Travel Rewards

Reward-friendly debit and current accounts

Barclays Avios Rewards for current account holders offers a monthly Avios allowance for a set fee, plus an annual British Airways upgrade voucher after a year of membership. It is a simple, low-effort way to keep Avios flowing from your day-to-day banking.

Chase UK offers 1% cashback for a promotional period on debit card purchases and no foreign transaction fees, which makes it a great travel spending account even though it earns cash not points. Barclaycard Rewards Visa is a fee-free credit card with 0% foreign transaction fees and a small cashback rate, ideal as an overseas back-up.

Revolut and other fintech points

Revolut’s points scheme allows members to earn points from card spending that can be redeemed for airline miles, including Avios, at published rates. Higher-tier plans usually earn faster and may bundle travel insurance or lounge access features, which can be helpful if you like an all-in-one app.

Shopping portals and cashback

The British Airways Avios eStore lets you earn extra Avios at hundreds of retailers when you click through before you shop. The Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic Shops portals do the same for Virgin Points. These stack with the points from your card, so always check the portal rates before buying online.

Virgin Red referral (free to join, 1000 points for using my link): Natasha’s Virgin Red referral

Avios referral (free to join, 500 bonus points with my link): Natasha’s Avios referral

TopCashback and similar sites can return a percentage of your spend in cash. You can either withdraw the money and add it to your travel fund or convert via partner routes where available to points-based rewards. Using a cashback site and a rewards card together effectively double dips your savings.

Topcashback referral: Natasha & Davids Topcashback referral

For many families the sweet spot is a mix of one Avios-earning Amex for big bonuses and vouchers, a Mastercard such as Barclaycard Avios for wider acceptance, and either a Virgin card or a flexible points card for diversification. Add supermarket or fintech options that convert to Avios or Virgin Points and you will be surprised how quickly balances grow. Pick the combination that matches your spending pattern and travel goals, and remember to layer in shopping portals to maximise every purchase.

As a mum to autistic and ADHD children, getting passport photos taken while trying to keep everyone regulated has been a real task for us. Here are some options on how you can go about getting passport photos done that meet the requirements of the HM passport office in the UK, with a detailed description of how I take my children’s photographs at home and make sure that they are likely to be accepted by the passport office the first time to avoid any delays in getting the new passport printed.

Below is a list of options that are best for getting your passport photo.

Do keep in mind that some options won’t work for you as it depends on the type of application that you do (an online application will need a digital photo, for example).

In a photo shop/by a photographer

You can get your passport photo taken by a professional. This ensures it is going to meet passport office requirements because the person taking the photo is experienced and knows exactly the different criteria for passport photos for each age group. You can ask for printed photos and also request a digital copy. The last time we used a photographer he emailed me a copy of the photo. Most photographers will be able to give you a passport photo code that you can use during your application with the HM passport office.

In a photo booth

Many stores and supermarkets have photo booths that you can use to get your passport photo taken in and you can walk away with it immediately. A photo booth will likely also be able to create a code for you that you can use during your application that will pull your specific photos and add them to the application for you.

By taking your own photo at home

You can also now take your own photographs for your UK passport at home. This is a very welcomed update to the application process and for families like mine with autistic children, this has been much better for us because it removes so many pressures like sensory input, new environments and time pressures. The downside is that photographs taken without professional input are less likely to be accepted – but I have some tricks you can use to increase the chance of acceptance so your application process goes smoothly and quickly.

Read all of the rules and requirements

Make sure you understand what is expected for the passport photograph before you try taking any. The rules are more flexible for children and there is also flexibility for people with a disability.

Just start

Try not to overthink it – I was awful for this the first time I tried taking my own passport photos. I read the rules over and over and talked myself out of trying it for so long because I didn’t have the perfect white wall or because I didn’t think I could get my son to stand still. Just try! It was actually much easier than I had thought and you don’t need a perfectly white background – it has to be light. There are some examples available on the government website about what is okay, and what isn’t. Take a look at them and go give it a shot!

How to have your setup

Do you have a light wall? White, magnolia or a light beige? Super light? Go for that, that is the easiest option for a child who can stand. If not, what I do is hang a light sheet or blanket as a background. Try not to worry about creases, there are options to fix that later and I explain how later in this post.

Using a flash on a phone camera is not a good idea, as soon as it flashes the person you are taking a photo of will blink and then the picture is not usable. The rules also state that you can’t have shadows on the face and this makes it a little difficult because any lights or lamps in the home often shine from one direction and make little shadows. I recommend using a light, even from another phone torch, and hold it slightly above or off to the side to create a stable light that removes any shadows that naturally occur due to the lighting in the home.

Use a professional compliance service

I was unsure what to call this service, so I’ve gone with compliance service. What I mean is you can submit your home-taken photographs to a professional to have them review it and tell you if it is likely to pass the HM passport office checks. This is a paid service and cost me less than £10 the last time I used it. What I like about this service is:

You select the type (country) of passport you are applying for and the system will edit the photograph to meet the size requirements

The online system can lighten up the background of your photograph and remove any shadows

You will get an immediate answer about whether it is likely to pass or not

An expert can review the photograph in more detail and tell you if you need to retake it or not

If you submit a photograph that does not pass their checks, you do not have to keep paying for another check – your original payment covers unlimited revisions.

Use a passport photo app to make your own edits

There are apps you can use to make edits yourself, or there are apps that work just like the online passport photo checking service I described above. Either way, they are another option for you to make minor fixes to the photo you have taken. The UK passport office states that you can’t enhance your photograph, what this means is you can’t enhance yourself. You should not make changes to how you actually look, but you can make changes to lighten up the background and make the person in the photograph central to meet the requirements for a UK passport. I happened to grab a free passport photo editing app via HotUKDeals a while ago.

My passport photo editing process

The online service to have your photo checked for compliance digitally and then by a professional is a paid service and it takes a little bit of time to get the final evaluation from a real person. On the most recent application I made, I had made an error in calculating the time between now and when the next time we needed to use a passport to travel was. I needed to get everything done as quickly as possible so I tried a little workaround to get a photo submitted that was likely to pass the criteria:

I uploaded the photo to the passport photo website to see how they edited it. I then used a passport editing app that I’d managed to grab for free via HotUKDeals a while back and used the editing features to lighten the background, centre the photo and size his face correctly in it and chop the photograph to the right size for a UK passport. I checked that the editing I had done looked like the photo uploaded to the paid service and when it did I downloaded it and added the application. I’ll update you here if it happens to get rejected but so far, so good.

UPDATE: They rejected Luke’s passport photo with the following reason: a shadow which was a small shadow from the tip of his nose and said it looked edited. I actually agree it did but so did the original. Due to the shape of his head it looks like we edited out an ear on the left. I retook photos right away, submitted them to the expert website for review and then to the passport office and they were accepted within 6 minutes of me sending them over. His new and old passport are now back with me and from the time they received his passport it took 7 days to get the new one through the door.

I hope this helps! I know it can be difficult to get our little ones with additional needs to comply with a photographer and the demands it puts on them in that environment. Hopefully this helps you find a way to make it work.

To learn more about the UK passport wait times you can look at my article here.

I have recently renewed passports for two of my children – and thanks to my audhd brain I have experience of two different application types. Not only that, both times I have had to renew have left us in a position where the passport may not come in time for a trip! I have learned a few things about UK passport wait times and how to figure out if your passport may make it in time for your trip.

Planning a family trip involves numerous details, and ensuring that everyone’s passports are up-to-date is paramount. Understanding the current processing times for UK passports can help you plan effectively and avoid last-minute stress. Here’s an overview of the standard processing times for various passport applications and a resource to monitor real-time updates.

Standard UK Passport Processing Times

According to HM Passport Office, the typical processing time for a standard passport application in the UK is up to 3 weeks. This timeframe applies to various application types, including:

First Adult Passport

Adult Passport Renewal

First Child Passport

Child Passport Renewal

It’s important to note that processing may take longer if additional information is required or if an interview is necessary. The processing time starts when HM Passport Office receives your documents as opposed to when you submit your application (as you can apply online as well as in person and by post).

Faster UK Passport Processing Times

The HM Passport Office for the UK does offer alternative passport processing service for those who need their passport more quickly. Rules wary with this service, what I mean by that is that adults and children do not have the same options available to them. You can find out more about the different options available and eligibility for them here.

Real-Time Passport Processing Updates

While the official guideline provides a general expectation, actual processing times can vary. For real-time updates, Passport Waiting Time offers daily averages based on recent applicant data. As of March 28, 2025, the reported average processing times are:

First Adult Passport: 14 days

Adult Passport Renewal: 10 days

First Child Passport: 12 days

Child Passport Renewal: 11 days

These figures are crowd-sourced from users and provide a more immediate snapshot of current processing durations. For further updates and community insights, you can follow their Facebook page: UK Passport Waiting Time.

Tips for a Smooth Passport Application

To ensure a timely passport processing experience:

Apply Early: Submit your application well in advance of your planned travel dates. I know this is not always possible, so read through the different application processing types and pick one that works for your planned travels.

Complete Documentation: Ensure all required documents are accurately completed and submitted. This includes making sure that you use a photograph that will be accepted the first time (I will add a bonus section at the end of this article about the different options you have for this).

Use Trackable Delivery: Send your application via a service that allows you to track its delivery. When you apply online you can choose to use a secure delivery service for a renewal (where you are asked to send the old passport back) and this costs an additional £5.

Monitor Application Status: Utilize the passport application tracking service to stay informed about your application’s progress. You get given a unique application reference you can use to log in and see a time-stamped timeline of the different parts of your application process.

By staying informed about current UK passport processing times and following these guidelines, you can better plan your family’s travel and enjoy a stress-free experience.

How To Make Sure Your Passport Photo is Accepted

Here is a list of options that are best for getting your passport photo, keep in mind that some options won’t work for you as it depends on the type of application that you do (an online application will need a digital photo, for example).

Use a professional compliance service

I was unsure what to call this service, so I’ve gone with compliance service. What I mean is you can submit your home-taken photographs to a professional to have them review it and tell you if it is likely to pass the HM passport office checks.

Use a passport photo app to make your own edits

There are apps you can use to make edits yourself, or there are apps that work just like the online passport photo checking service I described above. Either way, they are another option for you to make minor fixes to the photo you have taken.

For a much more detailed description on what I do to take my own passport photos at home and more links to where to edit and fix them up, check out this post I wrote. So far, I have not had any rejection by the HM passport office.

Embarking on a family cruise is an exciting way to explore the world together. Costa Cruises is the one cruise line we have found that offers tailored discounts and promotions that make traveling with your loved ones more affordable, and the discounts are available all year round, not at specific times as part of a limited promotion. Below, I will break down three key special offers to help you plan your dream getaway while staying within budget.

DISLCAIMER

We use affiliate links in our posts and if you click on them, we will earn a small commission if you book or buy something.

Important information to know

I think it is helpful to know how Costa Cruises normally price their cabins so you can then see the benefit of the discounts below.

There is only one ship in the Costa Cruises fleet which has cabins for 5 people, so on every cruise ship besides Diadema there will be a maximum of 4 people per cabin.

For every booking, the first 2 people in the Costa Cruises cabin pay full price: it doesn’t matter what their age is. If the second 2 people in the cabin are children there will be a discount to the cost for the 3rd and 4th guests. The price is usually significantly lower for children (only if they are the 3rd or 4th guest, that is). I am unsure what happens if 3 or 4 adults try to book, this is not something I have tried personally.

1. Kids Sail Free

Families can enjoy the incredible Kids Sail Free offer, making cruises more budget-friendly for groups with children. With this promotion, children under a certain age can sail at no additional cost when traveling with two adults in the same cabin. The discount only applies when there are two adults in the cabin and can discount the price for either 1 or 2 children. This is perfect for families looking to maximize value without sacrificing a high-quality travel experience.

Please bear in mind that there are still other charges associated with the child like any flights included in the package, port taxes and transfers.

2. Single-parent discount

Costa Cruises also have an offer for an adult who is travelling with one child. They call this the ‘one-and-a-half’ discount. Where a child under the age of 18 travels with one adult in the same cabin, the cost of the child’s fare can be discounted up to 50%.

Keep in mind that any additional charges like port taxes are charged at full price.

3. Big family discount

For families of 4 or 5, there is a discount available to make use of having 2 cabins instead of one. The family discount divides the family into two groups: 2 adults and 1 child and 2 children. Each group is assigned a cabin each. The 2 adults and 1 child pay the normal price, but the second cabin is given a 50% discount on the cost. Bear in mind that with Costa Cruises the first 2 passengers in a cabin pay the full price of an adult so when you use this big family discount, the cost of the second room is discounted as if it were 2 full price tickets rather than the cost you would see applied to the child who is the 3rd guest in cabin 1.

Examples of the discount in use:

To give an example of this in use, we recently booked a cruise which will take us around Asia and South East Asia in 2025.

Scenario 1:

When I attempted to book 2 cabins with the following breakdown: myself and the kids in one cabin to make use of the 3rd and 4th guests discount and David in a cabin alone I was unable to proceed to book as it said there were no cabins available for David.

Scenario 2:

When I attempted to book 2 cabins with the following breakdown: myself, Travis and Luke in one cabin and David and Sylvie in another cabin the cost was as follows:

Myself, Travis and Luke

David and Sylvie

2 full price, one child

One and a half discount

£5557.00

£3538.50

To book 2 cabins this way I would pay £9095.50.

Scenario 3:

When I emailed for a quote using the big family plan discount the cost was £8036.00.

As you can see, using the family plan discount saved over £1000 in this case.

Other discounts:

If you sign up to the Costa C | Club (for free) you can also benefit from members discounts immediately. They do not apply to all cruises and you must sign in to your account while searching for cruises to see the discount applied to the cost.

I’ve thrown together a quick list of travel deals I have spotted live for Travel Tuesday. Be quick – a lot of them will end at midnight.

It is also worth noting that many sites do not have Travel Tuesday branding up, but still have Black Friday or Cyber Monday banners. I guess it doesn’t matter – as long as the deals are good.

A repositioning cruise is a one-way cruise that occurs when a cruise line moves its ships from one region to another. This typically happens seasonally, as cruise companies relocate their vessels to different destinations that offer more favourable weather or tourism opportunities. For example, cruise lines often move ships from Europe or Alaska to the Caribbean or South America when winter approaches, and vice versa in the spring.

Ready to look at the cruises already? Here are some of my favourite places to browse.

Company

Link

Vacations To Go

Repositioning Cruises

Costa Cruises

Transoceanic Cruises

My favourite places to find repositioning cruises

Why Do Cruise Lines Reposition Their Ships?

Ships need to follow the seasonal demand for cruises, ensuring they operate in regions with ideal conditions for vacationers. Here are a few examples of common repositioning routes:

Transatlantic Repositioning Cruises: These move ships between Europe and the Americas, often in the fall and spring.

Panama Canal Repositioning Cruises: Ships might travel through the Panama Canal to relocate between the West Coast and the Caribbean or vice versa.

Transpacific Repositioning Cruises: These are typically used to move ships between Asia and North America or Australia and Alaska.

What Can You Expect on a Repositioning Cruise?

Repositioning cruises tend to offer unique itineraries, often with longer durations and fewer port stops. Instead, these cruises feature more sea days, giving you ample time to enjoy the ship’s amenities and onboard entertainment. At the same time, we have also found repositioning cruises with many stops which often span across continents.

While the number of stops may be limited compared to regular cruises, the ports visited on repositioning cruises are often more exotic and less frequented, adding to the sense of adventure. You might visit ports that aren’t typically included in standard itineraries due to their location on the repositioning route.

Benefits of a Repositioning Cruise

Great Value: Because repositioning cruises are one-way and have fewer stops, they often come at a lower price than regular cruises, offering fantastic deals for passengers. You can experience luxury ships and extended itineraries at a fraction of the regular cost.

Unique Destinations: Repositioning cruises often stop at off-the-beaten-path ports, giving travelers the opportunity to see destinations they may not visit on a traditional cruise.

Extended Time on Board: If you enjoy the ship’s amenities like dining, shows, pools, and spas, repositioning cruises offer plenty of time to explore and relax on the ship without the rush of daily port stops.

Considerations Before Booking

One-Way Travel: Since these cruises are not round-trip, passengers must arrange one-way flights, either to or from the embarkation or disembarkation point, which could add to your travel costs.

Longer Sea Days: For some, extended time at sea without frequent stops may feel monotonous. However, if you love spending time on the ship, this can be a bonus.

Seasonal Weather: Repositioning cruises take place at the edge of seasons, so while they allow you to follow good weather, there may be transitional climates along the way.

How To Find Repositioning Cruises

A lot of cruise lines offer repositioning cruises, but they may call them something different so it is not always easy to find them upfront.

One of my favourite resources for finding repositioning cruises is a website called Vacations To Go. You can filter the search results to show repositioning cruises. You do this in the section for the region. The only thing to keep in mind is they also have a category for Transatlantic and Transpacific so you may want to search those categories too.

I also often opt to cruise with Costa Cruises because the cost has always been far lower than any other cruise line. Within their website. In there ‘where are you going?’ section pick Transoceanic. This brings up a bunch of options but does not cover all of the repositioning cruises, such as those from Europe to Dubai.

Just remember the lots of different terms used for this type of cruise and watch out for them on the different cruising websites:

Repositioning cruise

Relocation cruise

Transatlantic cruise

Transatlantic crossing

Transpacific cruise

Transoceanic cruise

In summary, a repositioning cruise is a fantastic option for those looking for a more relaxed, affordable, and unique cruise experience. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser looking for new adventures or someone who enjoys long, leisurely days at sea, repositioning cruises offer an extraordinary way to travel across continents and oceans.

Travelling with a child on the autism spectrum requires careful planning and consideration of many details, including how to handle everyday tasks like doing laundry. Keeping clothes clean and fresh can be challenging, but with the right tools and tips, it becomes manageable and even easy. In this article, we’ll explore some innovative and handy TikTok finds that can make doing laundry while travelling a breeze. These solutions are perfect for families with autism, ensuring that everyone stays comfortable and happy throughout the trip.

Why Laundry Solutions Matter for Autism Families

Travelling with children on the autism spectrum often involves additional preparations to ensure their comfort and well-being. Clean clothes play a crucial role in maintaining sensory comfort, as many children with autism are sensitive to smells, textures, and the feel of fabrics. Having reliable laundry solutions means you can keep your child’s favourite clothes clean, reducing stress and sensory discomfort. Additionally, being prepared with laundry tools helps maintain a routine, which is essential for many autistic children.

Essential Laundry Tools and Tips for Travelling Families

Travel Washing Lines

Suction Travel Washing Lines:
One of the most popular TikTok finds for laundry while travelling is the suction travel washing line. These lines can be attached to smooth surfaces like bathroom tiles or windows, making them incredibly versatile. They’re perfect for hanging wet clothes to dry after a quick wash in the sink.

Ease of Use: Suction cups stick to various surfaces without causing damage.

Compact and Portable: Easy to pack in your luggage without taking up much space.

Versatile: Can be used indoors and outdoors.

These lines come with hooks at both ends, allowing you to attach them to different fixtures like shower rods, doorknobs, or tree branches.
Why It Helps Families With Autistic Children

Autisitic children often need space to run, jump and regulate. Outside spaces, such as playgrounds, are so beneficial for children who have autism because they provide a safe place to be themselves without expectations. When we travel, we will often go into any park we see and often use the Playground Buddy app to find the nearest play park we can visit in a rush.

In an age where technology can often seem isolating, Playground Buddy is a fantastic example of how an app can bring families together and encourage outdoor play. Easy to use, free, and packed with useful features, it’s a must-have tool for parents who want to make the most of their children’s playtime, no matter where they are.
